I had high hopes for these when I ordered them - they looked just like what I was looking for. I did measure the capacity, and when filled to the absolute brim, they do just barely hold 2 cups. Anything smaller is too small for a french onion soup bowl, IMO.

However these are virtually unusable as is.

The bottoms of these bowls are totally unglazed and very rough. You will not be able to set these on a dining room table or any other surface without the risk of scratching that surface up. Because the entire bottom of the bowl is unglazed, it is NOT dishwasher safe. If you try to wash this in the dishwasher, it will absorb water and dishsoap, which causes other problems. If you set it somewhere to dry on it's bottom, the absorbed water and soap (and other stuff that was flying around in the dishwasher) will gradually leak out over time and leave a stain. For the same reason you can't leave them to soak in dishwater in the sink.

The lids are oddly recessed and have an inner ledge that will be a pain to clean. Usually the inner side of the flange on the gallery in a lid like this is straight up and down but for some odd reason these have this weird ledge on the inner lip as well.

If you try to use them in the oven soon after washing, and before they've had a chance to fully dry out, there is an increased risk of breakage in the oven when the wet stoneware expands as it heats up and the glaze covering the rest of the bowl doesn't.

Furthermore, there are small pinholes in the bottom of each handle. These were undoubtedly placed there as a way to keep the hollow handles from exploding in the kiln when the air inside expands. However, this is once again a place for water to enter the pot and you won't be able to just pour it out.Read more ›

Used these for the first time last night with the Costco frozen French Onion soup. Cooked them for 40 minutes in a 400 degree oven, and they came out perfect. When cooked, the soup only filled the crock about halfway, so they're more than large enough for the task.

Yes, it's hard to clean up under the lip, it's not a smooth transition. And yes, there's a hole in the bottom of the handle as part of the manufacturing process. Neither of these is a dealbreaker, but if you put them in the dishwasher and expect everything to come out perfectly you're asking for trouble. Fill them with water after use and let them soak a few minutes, then hand wash them. Don't submerge them in dishwater. They come clean very easily, and you don't have to worry about water getting trapped in the handle.

I'd buy them again. They're just what I needed.

Bowls came unbroken and packaged fine. Immediately put in dishwasher with heat dry. Cooked Costco frozen French Onion Soup in my convection oven. No issues whatsoever. So far, very happy with these. I'll update if they decide to become uncooperative :-)

The soup crocks themselves have worked out well for me so far with no issues but this comes with a few things that need to be mentioned.

When I opened the box, I found the crock packaged at the top-side broken. The handle was cleanly broken off right at the point where it would've been glued (or however it's mounted...I'm no potter) on. I requested a new package through Amazon support (quick and easy to work with as always) and promptly received a second package. I was a bit suspicious of the first broken set so I decided not the send the first shipment back right away. I'm glad I didn't. The second set came with the top crock broken in the exact same manner. So I took both broken crocks, packaged them together and sent them back, keeping the good ones.

Now, everything is well, but the clean break at the point where the handle meets the pot is a bit of a concern. It's very well possible that this is purely an issue of packaging but I can't say it would be a total shock if a quality issue presents itself during future use.

I went ahead and ordered two sets of these and when they arrived I searched all over them and all four of the crocks were undamaged and ready to use. I put them to use the next day and they worked great. I was very happy with the end result.

These onion soup crocks are cute and affordable. Unfortunately, one of mine arrived broken. The pot and lid were ok, but one of the handles were broken off. I gave this to someone as a Christmas gift. Unfortunately the break wasn't discovered for months after my original purchase. I like to shop early, but in the end this preventing me from being able to do a return. A word of warning-- always open your breakables right away!

WE LOVE THESE!!! holds lots of soup compared to otheres I've seen.
