A New Beginning: Campy yet entertaining, April 20, 2009
The scares and seriousness are starting to wear off with Friday the 13th: A New Beginning and instead we have something a little more comical, a little more campy and a little more entertaining. Now none of these films have ever been high art or considered serious horror. However it is obvious with this film the writing is weaker, the performances are weaker and the effects are weaker. Yet it still manages to be fun and watchable. The killer's identity (using Jason's mask and machette) is predictable. The script could have been better if it were re-worked and more red-herrings had been thrown our way to keep us guessing. The Tommy Jarvis character from the previous installment Final Chapter is presented here all grown up, still trying to battle his inner demons from the horror he experienced when he was younger. The setting is a home in the woods where the mentally-challenged try to get back to living a normal life. Another problem was that some of the characters were not developed near enough. They were basically just there for the kills. And in films, characters need to be created and developed properly in order for the audience to identify with and care about them. Otherwise, the impact isn't as great. For example, I liked the Violet character yet we didn't find out anything about her. The most overused cliche's are also present here. The broken down cars, the cat jumping out, the heroine falling down when being chased by the killer, etc. Some pluses were the settings they used which were used effectively. The infamous rain storm, the woods, the barn and the final chase scene near the end are all on nice display here. The lead heroine Pam, played by Melanie Kinnaman is very likeable and good-looking. As mentioned in other reviews, the actress who plays the "Ethel" character who lives near the mental home with her over-grown, dim-witted son was over-the-top and definitely the scene-stealer. Despite the flaws, I found enough to enjoy this film. Hopefully people are not giving this a poor rating due to the fact that the killer wasn't really Jason. I always give credit to the producers from trying something new (and yes, I'm one of the few who like Halloween III: Season of the Witch). Many fans complain that the sequels become to redundant and dull yet when something new is tried, they complain even more. Take this one as a stand-alone film with little inspired touches from the previous films and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Unfortunate Release, July 5, 2009
Basically the problem with this "deluxe edition" release is that there's not much "deluxe" about it. I was pretty excited when I first heard about a "deluxe edition" part 5 being released. Unfortunately for me the extras that were on the workprint release of this same film weren't included. There are some deaths scenes in this film that you actually never get to see. However, these deaths scenes are on the workprint. I just think that if they wanted to release this movie yet again, they should have made it worthwhile by including the extras. It's kind of like when you buy Goonies on DVD and you dont get the extra scenes of the octopus battle and when Troy steals the map from them. I mean why bother? Save your money...because you get no extra death scenes. It's not much different than any other release of "A New Beginning". I'm very dissatisfied with this release.

Not too bad sequel on a good new DVD!, June 20, 2009
Years after Tommy Jarvis (John Shepard) killed Jason Voorhees for good, he has been shuffled around various mental insitutions. He's now placed at a halfway house for troubled teens where he can try to refresh his life after years of being haunted by Jason, over there a patient named Joey (Dominick Brascia) who annoys the other patients gets hacked up by a mad strong patient named Vic (Mark Venturni) and gets arrested. After that horrific killing, Tommy befriends a young boy named Reggie (Shavar Ross) who is the grandson of one of the workers and now there's a killer on the loose but has Jason really came back from the dead or is it someone else following in his footsteps?
Considered by fans as the worst F13th movie ever, i don't think it's as bad as they said it was. The film was originally considered to be a "New Beginning" hench the title after the success of killing off Jason for good in "The Final Chapter" and the producers decided to start again anew to the series of making different killers in place of Jason but fans rejected the idea as they wanted their hero back kind of like how Halloween III was to the Halloween series. The film does co-star Miguel Nunez Jr. of "Return of the Living Dead" fame with appearence by Corey Feldman, this one offers a hell of a body count by the number 20 in that record with some gruesome murders like beheadings, skull crushings, garden tools to the eyes and more. There's a couple of hot nude chicks especially that blonde waitress that gets murdered and there's some twists with turns that almost made the franchise go to a new level but due to fan outcry the producers decided for the next movie to have Jason to return from the grave.
This DVD offers sharp picture and sound with cool extras like audio commentary, Lost Tales from Camp Blood part 5 short, Crystal Lake Massacres revisited part II mockumentary, featurette and trailer.
