I really hesitated to make this purchase...[...](with free shipping at Amazon) for a mat sounded like a lot of money so I used Google and could not find the same mat for less money elsewhere. I have no regrets making the purchase. The mat looks great, stays in position, allows my chair to both move and stay where I want, has not cracked or broken.

The details:

The mat arrived flat and in excellent condition between sheets of cardboard.

The mat is laid on a Berber carpet with no padding between the carpet and floor. The carpet is firm and does not collapse when being walked on.
The chair used on the mat has 5 individual rollers spaced evenly from one another. Each of the 5 rollers are about 1 ½ inches wide. I weight about 200 pounds. The mat flexes very slightly under the wheels of the chair. The textured surface and amount of flexing allows the chair to move around easily when I want the chair to move... and keeps the chair from rolling around when I want the chair to remain still. (There are no ball bearings in the wheels of my chair...each wheel is on a shaft).

The material of the mat is clear without any tinting and would be transparent except for the rough texture on the upper side which causes a slight diffusing of light. Although it is obvious there is a mat on the floor, the mat and carpet under the mat blends very well with the rest of the carpet in the room.

On the bottom, the mat is smooth with numerous individual "spikes" that cover the entire bottom and are located about 1 ¼ inch from one another. The lengths of the spikes are about 1/8 inch. The mat holds firmly in place and does not "float"... the mat is in the same location now as when I first laid it on the carpet. The edge of the mat lays down flat and I do not see any tripping hazard.

Despite advertising claims to the contrary, vinyl chair mats -- even "heavy duty" ones" -- always seem to end up cracking, so I decided that this polycarbonate alternative might be worth a try despite its relatively high cost. Yes, it does creep around just a bit, but I can live with that as long as it doesn't crack, and in that respect this mat has performed as I hoped. But four months isn't long enough for a thorough evaluation. Time will tell more, and I will update this review if any problems surface in the future.

UPDATE, September 8, 2012: A little more than a year has passed, and I have not yet had any problems with cracking.

UPDATE, October 26, 2014: Still no cracks.

I am beyond pleased with this chair mat so far. Typically, I like to wait in order test out anything I buy prior to writing a review, but this time I couldn't wait.

I work from home, so I am in my office all day. My previous chair mat was purchased from Office Depot for something like $30-$40, and within a couple days after bringing it home, the cracking started. After about 5-6 months, there had been so much cracking and buckling that my feet were starting to sometimes get scraped when attempting to move the chair. And moving the chair was almost impossible as it would get stuck in all the cracks. This does not work well when you are working between two different computers.

Needless to say, I looked to Amazon to get a replacement instead of going to an office supply store. My new Cleartex chair mat was received a couple days ago, and there is a complete difference. Instantly, I could tell the quality is much better. The mat is very thick and not too pliable. Now my chair can actually move freely without much effort. For the last two days, I have smiled after sitting down in my office chair when I used to curse and grumble every morning. What a difference! It's weird to say, but I love, love, love my new chair mat!

UPDATE: I've owned this chair mat for more than 2 years now with no issues or cracking. It is still in great condition, and I am back to order a second for my son's desk. Just FYI, we have very dense, medium pile carpet with a pad underneath. Given the density of our carpet, that may the be the reason I've not had any issues with cracking. Our carpet does not allow much "give" when standing or sitting on the chair mat.

Although I was wary about ordering this product online, this chair mat actually does what the description promises. Previously purchased mats from local office supply stores, all quickly cracked and split. My husband weighs 225 lbs. and hasn't made a dent in this mat. It is barely noticeable on the carpet and has no raised edges to feel if the chair moves off the mat. Price is reasonable, too.

The polycarbonate chair mat UtilMat from Cleartex was bought in replacement of another plastic chair mat
that showed (after about a year of use) chair-leg marks and cracks. The replacement shows none of these, so far,
about 2 months of use. I am very happy with the quality of this product, which also arrived promptly.
