About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed., January 18, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered this product from Amazon last November. It's been an overall bad experience so far.

First of all, when the unit arrived at my house, the box looked like it had been dropped from an airplane. It was covered with black grime and there were several holes. I should have refused shipment at that time, but I was excited to start my exercise program and did not want to wait another 2 weeks. So I did a quick inspection and since most of the parts were metal I figured it was OK and accepted the box.

This turned out to be a bad decision as even though most of the parts were metal, there were some plastic parts and they had been damaged (strictly cosmetic). I figured I could easily call Nautilus and have them replaced, so I started assembling the machine. Unfortunately Nautilus refused to supply a replacement part and told me I should send the machine back to Amazon. Obviously this was not happening after I had already assembled the machine.

The assembly took about 2.5 hours (and I am fairly mechanically inclined.) Some of the parts did not go together easily.

The electronic display looks nice, but has some minor design flaws. The worst one of these in my opinion is the heart rate monitor. It takes about 20-30 seconds to get anywhere near an accurate reading. No matter what my heart rate is when I grip the handlebars the monitor always starts at 72, then goes to 80, then 100, then 120, then small increments until it eventually gets to where my heart rate actually is. I would think it would be easy to get a fairly close estimate after the first few beats. I guess I could use the heart rate strap, but it does not look very comfortable.

Also, the workouts are divided into 40 segments. For some reason the unit is unable to divide the time properly unless the workout is a multiple of 10 minutes. So you wind up getting extra intervals at the end of the workout. Also, the workout routinely tells you to increase or decrease your stride, which I find odd for a machine that has a fixed stride. I guess the workout texts were just copied from another machine.

Overall the machine does not feel very solid, I am 280 lbs and the machine sometimes sways from side to side while I am working out. Also, Nautilus did not include a tube of grease with the machine, and now it is starting to make a grinding noise on one side, so I am going to have to stop using it until I can get grease from the manufacturer. Maybe my expectations were too high for a product priced at $650, but I would be surprised if this product lasts until the warranty is up.

Update 2/4/10 - The right 'pedal' has started to come apart, I am going to have to call Nautilus customer service tomorrow. Will report my experience here. Downgraded rating to one star pending speedy and successful resolution.

I waited until I had this trainer for a month. I am very happy with it. It is well designed and has many design features I like. It is portable. I keep it in a corner and I can easily move it each day I use it. I would recommend it to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good so far!, February 10, 2010
I got this machine yesterday and assembled it as soon as I got home from work. I do have to disagree with the time to assemble posted in another review. It took me just a hair over an hour and fifteen minutes to assemble and that was including unboxing all the way to final assembly. I am fairly mechanically inclined though, but I can't imagine it taking more than 2 hours to assemble for the average person.

After assembly, I spent an hour working out on the elliptical and it seemed smooth and steady. You need to make sure the feet on the bottom are level though so it doesn't rock at all. I am 187lbs and it was very stable during my workout, but I can see that not being the case with people closer to the maximum weight for the machine. The machine only weights 160lbs or so, so it's just simple physics at that point :-p

Overall, a good experience so far. I will try to update this after a few weeks as I will be using this pretty much daily.
