Do not buy the pro art trays. I cannot understand how any of the reviewers gave them positive reviews...unless the product has changed considerably. This is the lightest gauge steel imaginable, and the flaws outnumber the clean areas. You could cut your finger on the rolled edge.....which is already rusted in places. These are obviously rejects from a Chinese factory, which had to be bought for next to nothing.....and then sold for this kind of price????? ridiculous! If it had been $2, I would still have considered sending it back.

We have very few art stores here, but I found trays from art alternatives and Jack Richeson (both also on Amazon) which were heavier, far fewer flaws (but still flawed), and about the same price. If you can see them locally, I would suggest you do it in person and choose the pick of the litter. All of the ones I picked through locally were better than the pro art junk.

The "Pro Art 7-1/2-Inch by 11-Inch Butcher Tray" is very nice. The center is slightly raised so water doesn't puddle around the watercolors I put and mix in the central area. The excess water runs to the sides.

It is easier to clean and nicer to mix paint on and pick up paint from with my brushes than the plastic palettes I've used.

I kept eyeing these in the art supply stores and finally decided to buy the smallest size Amazon had available and give it a try. I really love using it and am thinking about buying at least one in a larger size for when I need a larger area to mix paint in.

This product arrived with several chips on the edges and the inside. Worse, on the bottom were 4 chips where I suppose it had been fired on a stand of some sort. These were very sharp, and my husband was afraid I'd cut myself (I do that), and I was afraid I'd scratch a table. More importantly, if the base metal would rust, the chips probably would affect the colors of my watercolor paints. The label said chips were natural and not a defect, but I don't buy that. I wouldn't want chips on a porcelain plate, so why accept them here. I won't be using this. Luckily, Amazon's return/refund policy is fabulous.

I have been using an old kitchen plate as a paint palette for years and when I spotted the butcher tray style palette in an art supply catalog, I knew I had to have one. However, I didn't want the large sizes so I searched a bit and found the smaller version (7x10) here at Amazon for a decent price.

The tray was banged up upon arrival- not from the packing but just in general. A bit of the enamel around the edges was chipped off and knocking about inside the "Pro Art" label and wrapping, so I imagine they come from the manufacturer that way. It's fine for me because it's only going to get more beat up in my art studio, but it does give me pause about the long-term durability of this palette.

As noted by other reviewers, the quality on these things is not good, which is unfortunate, because there doesn't seem to be anything better in this size. Quality issues aside, though, these are very useful as butchers trays, which is what they are designed for. We use them for marinating meat, prepping meat for the grill, and they are particularly useful for defrosting packages of meat or poultry in the fridge. Those inevitable leaks that result in chicken juice leaking all over the fridge are a thing of the past if you set it in one of these trays, and the low sides provide good air circulation and visibility. I haven't tried it for this purpose yet, but they also would be good for dry-aging beef in the fridge.

I had been using a cheap plastic palette and found it to be an incredible pain in the butt to clean, I had to soak it for quite a while in hot water and then the paint would come right off, but it was my only palette and so I didn't like that. I just LOVE using this butcher tray, the paint dries and you can peel it right off or wash it off easily with water and continue to use it. I would highly recommend this and love it.

This is my favorite tray for my water colors . I can place the colors in the center and they never run into each other. The water runs to the sides rather than staying in the center, important to me when I want to add a glaze to my pictures.

I use this with two layers of wet paper towels under a layer of kitchen parchment paper which keeps the paints moist all day. If I'm working quickly, I use it plain. It is a good shallow tray with a nice edge, perfectly plain and enameled, which cleans up well. When I have time I run it through the dishwasher. Rectangle shape means it takes up less space at my side. I like using it and am pleased with the quality.
