I got this unit because my electrician said RAB are the best.

I have to disagree. After he installed the light, I found several downsides to this product that I would expect on the cheapest lights.

First, the controls. The time controls are knobs sort of like stove heat knobs. The worst problem is the time knob where you set the time the light stays on once its triggered. There are only two numbers. At the low end there's 5 seconds and at the opposite end there's 12 minutes. So if you want to set what I would think is a typical time of 2 to 5 minutes, where the heck is that? Half way between 5 secs and 12 minutes? Who knows? I had to experiment and randomly trigger the light by trial and error many, many times to find where 2 or so minutes is. I would think that maybe the 1 minute then 5 minute marks would be shown somewhere on the dial between the two obviously extreme settings that no one uses - but it isn't.

Second, the light sensor on mine was picking up the light from the floods themselves. This would actually shut off the light before the set lighting duration was achieved. To hear the RAB techs explain this, when the light is triggered, the day-night sensor on the light itself might think its daylight and then shut off in the middle of the lights intended duration. This is confusing since it appears the light is set for a short duration, so it took me a of adjusting the time to realize it wasn't a time related problem.

Overall RAB makes great lights with a relaxed piece of mind knowing you have 10 years of warranty. Install was pretty easy and straight forward. However maybe it was specific to me, but the two nuts that are supposed to tighten to hold the rotating arm in place were extremely difficult to tighten. This was the hardest part for me in trying to secure these two nuts. Specific to my instal, there was not enough clearance for the Philips screw so I had to get creative to tighten it. However the serious flaw is that these lights do not have what's called a Dual Bright function where at sunset the lights come on a dim setting and once movement is detected they come on full bright. We had that feature on ou previous lights before they failed. I wanted something more reliable and these came up. I thought these did have a dual bright function but I misread the label it was dual lamp not dual bright. Functionally these are a very good set and well designed in that regard but if the dual bright function is what you like then sadly these are not for you. I really wanted these to work sadly not for us. Therefore for the lack of dual bright and the very difficult locking nut to adjust the arms I have taken off 2 stars.

I ordered this product to replace a similar 25 year old RAB fixture that was still working but was getting very weathered. Assembly was easy and the new motion detector is working as expected. Later, I cleaned up the 20 year old RAB fixture, repainted it, and installed it at another location on my house where it continues working well. In my experience this company makes some rugged products.

I have many years experience installing, Repairing and Replacing outdoor lighting, outlets & wiring them.

Most or should I say almost ALL where cheap CRAP that didn't work properly or last up to or over a year without failing in some manor.

With that said, I found RAB products here on Amazon. I read ALL the negative reviews, compare to number to the positive and determine if that person has any idea what their talking about, or just opened the box and wrote a review without actually installing it themselves, knowing other brands and see if it passed the true test of time. THEN I pick a product that survives my scrutiny of the reviews.

So I purchased RAB components to build a security dusk to dawn duel floodlight over the large garage I have. The old unit was crap & installed by a complete retard. So I had to start by removing EVERYTHING including the connection box and wiring all the way to the breaker box ( Where the idiot that the whole garage could run on 2 20amp circuit breakers... DUH!).
Now I'm updating the fuse box, wiring connection boxes, RAB (4 hole) Mounting plate, RAB 2 Flood Light Fixtures and 1 RAB Highly rated Sensor.

First thing us installers notice is quality. These parts where impressive! Installation was a breeze, functionality was?is perfect!
I was so impressed that over a year of use through earthquakes, rain, hail and power surges that fried almost everything else in the house & garage, The units still look and work great, So I purchased a few more for myself and family members. All of those units are still operating.

One thing I did different was to install 25WATT 2500lm PAR38 COB LED floodlight bulbs that have a cool White Color Temperature : 6000K-6500K.Read more ›
