We have made home made ice cream for over 50 years now and Morton ice cream salt is our salt of choice. It's a rock salt that is always nice and free flowing and I've noticed that there is not as much impure grey trash in the salt as I have found in other brands. When we started to make ice cream the only salt we could buy was the bags of salt used in the winter on drives and sidewalks. Now we can get the salt especially packaged for the sole purpose of making the summer treat. We like the size of the salt particles, neither being too big nor too small which makes freezing time for the ice cream faster. One of my little delights is sucking on a piece of ice that's sat in the salty brine in the ice cream maker. This process takes me back many many years to when our son had to sit on a towel my in-laws had placed over the top of the hand cranked maker to keep the maker from walking off when the ice cream got so frozen that the handle was hard to crank. He was the smallest person available and weighed just right to do the sitting, a job he didn't like but one that has turned into a childhood memory for him. Everyone had to take their turn cranking as this was in the days before the electric ice cream makers hit the market.
