I purchased a dual chalkboard/cutting board from Crate and Barrel, and wanted "soap chalk" for the board to label different cheeses, meats, or other fun appetizers that would be served on it. I also thought it would be cute to use the board as a welcome or kitchen sign when not in use. These are perfect for exactly that, I actually might prefer them over my normal chalk! They are so smooth and write nicely. They also wash off great and the holder is nice for not getting it on your hands (although it does not shed like normal chalk dust). Definitely recommend!

It's not bad considering it was less than five dollars and included four extra pieces of 5" X 1/2" X 3/16" soapstone in addition to the one that came loaded in the holder. The holder works okay, but the thin metal edges seem a little sharp and it does tend to slip closed occasionally if too much force is applied when marking metal for cutting. Not a big deal for me though because I often just prefer to cut the end of the soapstone at a 45-degree angle and use it in my hand without the metal holder. For what it cost I can’t really complain. I think the pieces of soapstone alone were probably worth the purchase price.

Love this! I painted a wall in my kitchen with chalkboard paint because the surface isn't as smooth as a regular chalkboard, regular chalk seems to practically disintegrate in my hands. This chalk is brilliant! It writes smoothly and the best part, it lasts! The holder makes writing easy and less messy too!

I filed a bevel on the end so I could mark fine lines on hot-rolled flat bar for cutting with a chop saw or cutting torch. The holder works really well with locking the Soapstone securely in place when using, and protects it when retracted and stored. I am very pleased with this purchase.

I recently started metal working and this soapstone does its job well. The holder is a bonus as you don't have to worry about getting soapstone dust all over you. You can also hang it off of your pocket or belt.

The markings withstands high temperatures such as a flame or torch, but it does rub off. I believe this is how soapstone is supposed to behave anyway.

so students would know where to make cuts to build their robots.

What one student reported, This product works adequately. It marks flat metal well but it doesn't do as well on long thin pieces of metal, like an axle. This product will serve your needs very well if you are buying it to mark larger flat pieces of metal. It's adequate if you are only cutting two or three axles.
