Body of the clamp is aluminum. Better suited for light woodwork rather than work with heavy metal. I got two of these and some of the heavier Bessey clamps. These Hobarts got used one time, for 5 min. after which i tossed them into the tool bin and never used them again. Too light weight and the handle is plastic. Jaws did not want to hold material well either. Of no use with the inch and a half materials i was working with.

The mfg website doesn't even show the dimensions of the size of the T and miter joints you can make with this, so I called Hobart. They had to pull one out of the box to do the measurements -

T-joint max - 2 15/16

Miter joint max - 2 15/16

Wow...if that's correct, that's REALLY impressive for the cost. The WAC45 Stronghold doesn't allow for that much, and they are ~ $100 each.

------------------

FOLLOW UP - once I got the product, I found out that NO, the measurements given to me ARE NOT RIGHT for the T-JOINT.

MAX T JOINT - Yes, the continuous piece can be up to 2 15/16. HOWEVER, the perpendicular piece can only be MAX 1 3/4"

I needed to do an urgent repair on a piece of machinery and had to weld together some 2"x2"x 1/4" angle iron. I saw one of these at our local TSC store and decided to take a chance on it. Upon opening the package one of the screws that holds the thing together fell out because some of the parts did not fit together well enough for the machine screws to engage the threads. It took me some time to file down the poorly cast part, countersink a couple holes deeper and reassemble it all.

The main frame of this device is thin-walled lightweight cast metal, perhaps aluminum, or some other metal whose metaling point is below that of steel. I decided this would be a poor choice if I ever wanted to use my torch. I used a stick welder (SMAW if my welding instructor reads this) and only tacked the work in areas not adjacent to the clamps surfaces. I had to add some additional clamps to hold the work in place because tightening the Hobart's screw probably would have broken it.

At the end of the day I did end up with squarely welded parts. This device did work with considerable help from myself. It's basically a cheaply made version of a better made brand, i.e. Bessey. I would have gotten a Bessey or some other more solid clamp if I had the opportunity but it was a Sunday morning and I had to get the part welded. I'm giving this purchase a single star due to its poor assembly and the relative high cost compared to quality. If you think you'll need a sturdy clamp often in the future I suggest you not buy this one.

Bought 4 sent 3 back. Too light duty and not precise enough for me but it was worth a shot. You get what you pay for. Better suited for woodworking than steel.

The clamps came to me quickly, kudos to the shipper. That's where the quality ends however. when I clamped up some 1 inch square tube the inside corner of the tube opened to a gap of about .100 while the outside corner maintained contact. I removed the parts from the clamp and rechecked them on a known flat surface. the 45 degree cuts were perfect and everything mated up well. I then checked the clamp and found the vertical fingers of the clamp are not perpendicular to the bed of the clamp which, when clamped up, causes the parts to roll, thus forming the gap. Quite surprising that a well respected brand would put their good name on junk like this. I guess I'll machine some aluminum wedges and rivet them to the fingers to restore squareness.

I do not recommend these clamps to anyone. Even my competition.

I took a gamble when ordering them; I am pleased I did, it met my expctations and holds well in welding medium size metal structures so long as they cool off in the clamp.

This clamp is almost worthless. It broke mere hours after I got it. The craftsmanship is pretty poor and the plastic parts are hardly what I would expect for a welding tool.

The jaws of the clamps that hold the pieces curve outwards. This means that when the clamp is tightened, the pieces do not fit well together, making the whole product useless.
