I looked seriously at this and the Schlage BE365 Keypad Deadbolt, and ended up choosing this Kwikset primarily because its SmartKey system enabled me to match a couple of other outside doors to the same key quickly and without additional cost, it's bump-resistant and harder to pick, and it has a smaller and more attractive exterior profile. Installation was straightforward and went without complications for me. Make sure to allow the bolt orientation cycle to complete when installing the batteries for the first time. An electric motor drives the bolt and is powered by 4 AA batteries, which are not included. The instructions say not to use rechargeable, and advise that typical alkaline batteries will need replacing once a year. I installed 4 Energizer Advanced Lithium AA Batteries and am hoping they will not need replacing for a few years. So far, we've been very pleased. It's convenient to be able to go on short errands or out exercising without needing to take a house key. I'll update if there are issues with longevity, as that seems to be a concern raised by a number of other reviewers. My biggest disappointment with this unit so far is that while the exterior lock and panel are made of metal and look and feel high quality, the panel and thumb turn on the inside of the door are made of painted plastic. It looks convincingly like metal, but feels less substantial. For that, it loses a star.Read more ›

I really like this dead bolt, but seeing so many Bad reviews makes me worry a bit. I will update this review if any issues arise.
Installation was breeze! I actually had a old manual Kwikset dead bolt and the holes aligned up perfectly. I read the instructions and had No problems at all, setting the code was easy, works great! I like how I can leave the home and just press the LOCK button and it locks, then I come home and enter my code and it unlocks! I dont like using a Key on a dead bolt, just seems to take too long, this is great!
Quick Update: Many reviews have said the motor drive goes out early. I can happily report my unit is still working fine. The batteries wore out just one time. I highly recommend this dead bolt.
Quick Update II: Well here it is Feb 25, 2012 now and it's still working great! Other than the batteries dying out one time, this dead bolt electronic system is flawless!
QUICK UPDATE III:UPDATE: well here it is Dec 29, 2013 and it still works perfect! Never had a problem with it but for the batteries died. Maybe living in the warm south, the unit doesn't go through harsh winters that may damage the electronic device, just a thought. Still works great, still love it.

I bought the kwikset smartcode pb deadbolt as a gift to my wife. We are always looking for the key. The installation into an existing baldwin deadbolt took less than 15 minutes. I was able to program the two codes easily. My issue is with the quality of the unit. The outside seems like a nice brass finish. The inside is a brass coated plastic. When I opened the box, I saw the unit had finger prints on the finish. I was not able to remove these. Within two weeks the unit has reset itself and did not accept the codes that had been working. I have had to reset the codes twice. A third time and it comes off the door. I bought the kwikset because of the $20 rebate and cost was $30 less than competing devices. My suggestion is to look at the other units. The cost is not enough to put up with the quality and unit resetting.

The lock seems great for the first few months (you'll note that most of the reviews were written soon after purchase). However, within a year, the motor that retracts the lock burned out on one of my locks, and the cylinder gave up the ghost as well, so the key didn't work either. The second lock that I purchased at the same time just lost its electronic mind --- it was mechanically okay, but it wouldn't reset or take a new combination. Like most Kwikset products, the construction is just too cheesy. The keys, for example, are so thin that they'll actually bend. I'd avoid this product unless you intend to replace the locks every year or so, and be sure to have another way to get into the house if both the electronic and mechanical mechanisms fail, as happened to me.

I live alone and would be locked out if I lose my key. So, I decided to install a deadbolt with a keypad to resolve that concern. When I started searching for a keypad lock I came across the bumping issue. With a lot of sites selling bump keys, they have become really easy to get. Before long they will be very common on the streets. The internet has numerous videos of bump key opening locks as quickly as with a regular key. This is a problem that can only get bigger. So, I decided to get a bump-proof lock.

I selected the Kwikset model 99090-002. It is the best bump-proof lock that I could find that use both a keypad and key. I considered the Schlage BE365PLY619 which has a much more solid construction. But, it is very susceptible to bumping.

I now have the Kwikset electronic deadbolt installed. Its' ok, does the job. But, it has a really cheap plastic feel to it. While the outside part of the lock is metal, the inside part is plastic and feel really flimsily. It has a motor that moves the deadbolt. It works well but I'm really not impressed. It adds to the cheap toy feeling of the product and makes me question how long it will be before it breaks. A deadbolt door lock should not be made of cheap plastic! While I did chose the Kwikset over the Schlage for its better bump-proof design, I will switch to a more solidly build product when I find it. If Schlage adds a better bump-proof design to its BE365PLY619 product I will install it and trash the Kwikset.
