These are hands-down the best crates for quality, style, and (almost) price. Buy them now.

If you need a little more convincing...

Be careful of the cheaper Sterilite file crates that don't have the circle-shaped side cutouts. This version (16939006) is the best of all crates on the market and on the lower end of price spectrum as well. You can stack these top-to-bottom, as well as side-to-side (e.g. create a bookshelf). MOST OTHERS WON'T stack side-to-side. Each way you can stack it has tabs or grooves to lock into position (versus cheaper ones that don't lock into place on side-to-side configurations).

Another reviewer complained about the price of these crates. I can understand, but they were spoiled due to getting an awesome deal. These nicer ones go for about $7 + tax at a certain superstore retailer, so Amazon is 5 bucks high right now ($50 for 6 instead of about $45 after tax in a store). Amazon apparently does do (or has had) sales where they went down into the $30-dollar range on these nicer ones. However, it's worth the extra 5 bucks for me not to wait in line and haul these monsters home (they rarely have this many in stock anyway). Just bite the bullet and get the good ones here & now, you won't regret it. They are worth it at this price ($50).

Ideal uses:
-File folders (can easily replace an expensive file cabinet and is better because you can haul a single crate anywhere and sort through it)
-Bookshelves (put them on their side and stack them to fit your space)
-Raw papers (I store reams of legal docs too large to put in individual file folders with a fancy colored-sheet to separate and they fit great)
-Kid-stuff organizers

Amazon had a great price on this 6-pack of crates when I bought them, but now I see the price is nearly double. They're not what you might call "standard size" (they seem a bit shorter in the long dimension), but they are certainly adequate for storing stuff. They do nest together so you can stack them easily. Two crates stacked fits well under my standard-height IKEA desk, with enough space between the desk and the top of the crate so I can reach in and get what I need without difficulty.

I wouldn't repurchase these at the current price, but at thirty dollars (which is what I paid the first time) I would.

It had been three or four years since my last plastic crate purchase, and when I shopped for a few more, it appeared all of them (most of them?) now have a reinforcement band around the top edge, which in terms of longevity and durability probably is a good idea. However, although they don't stack properly with the old-style varieties, they stack just fine with others of the same kind. At nearby Big Box where individual items are less expensive than they average out to at Amazon's price for a 6-pack, the current crate color selection includes standard inter-mixable hues of black, purple, olive, orange, navy; Amazon also offers white. I like the decorative appearance of round rather than rectangular or diamond-shaped holes in the construction. These are a little larger than the older type, which matters little is you're using only this decade's model, but visually and practically is somewhat of a bummer if, like me, you already have a few dozen. I use most of mine for books, a habit that has proven very handy for moving house, since all the books can remain in place, though I always tape plastic over each crate. I also store notebooks, music scores, and art supplies.

Needless to say, although authentic reinforced milk crates from actual dairies are the very best, you don't always have a Friend in the Business to bring them to you, and even those are not infinitely everlasting. Recommend? Why not! It looks as if Amazon still carries Old Style storage crates, but none of the local Big Boxes did. Since this is a very recent purchase, I may update my review later.

I needed to move a large number of books from one place to another, These crates fill the need. I ordered 12 crates (2 boxes) which where filled and refilled several times. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is they could be a touch stronger. One crate bent under the load from a 3-high stack. All in all, I am most happy. Now if I could only find room for all these books.

As a side note: I did find a company with commercial grade crates, which I was going to purchase. They did not want to provide a shipping cost on-line or by e-mail - until after I ordered ??? These had free shipping through Amazon.

First/best review is spot on about the combination of quality, design, and pricing. I know we're talking about milk crates here, but the modular connections are an innovative feature. I'd like to meet the engineer who created them. They're large and have a good amount of plastic. Compare this to the 1692, which is very light duty. I use these as a bookshelf and they'll come handy when I need to move. For $50 bucks, I got 10 at Walmart this week though. I was disheartened at first because these 1693s weren't sold at my location, but I was picky enough about the price so I waited.

Actually, frugal is more accurate. I looked everywhere (at one point, only Sears had them, 6 for $100+). In my search for functional milk crates, I've been disappointed by the lack of supply and inflated prices everywhere. Why does such a basic item have to be so expensive? Great job, Sterilite! Helping out folks who can't have or don't want a bunch of furniture.
