The Japanese REALLY know how to make a mechanical pencil, and the Kuru Toga is proof of that. Make sure you purchase the Japanese version and not the cheaper American build. A buddy of mine is teaching English in Japan and I asked him to send me some of the best Japanese school supplies, several of these pencils were in the box.

The Kuru Toga has a special feature that rotates the lead as you write. It's not going to keep you from always having to rotate the pencil when writing in English since you don't lift the pencil off the paper and place it back down as much as you would writing Japanese, but it definitely cuts down on the need. The "Diamond Infused" lead these pencils ship with is much stronger than traditional lead and writes smoother as well. I also highly recommend the 0.3mm lead size pencil over the 0.5mm as I prefer a fine line. Keep in mind you can use regular 0.3mm lead in this pencil, but it's such a thin lead that the non-Diamon Infused lead will be prone to break. The Japanese Kuru Toga's have a metal tip that helps balance the pencil, the American Kuru-Toga's lack this feature.

Remember to buy a separate stand alone eraser to go with this. All Japanese students use mechanical pencils and they always have three things in their pencil case. Extra lead, and two erasers. Don't expect to get much of any use of the eraser on the pencil.

Pros:
- Auto-Rotate feature cuts down on need to adjust pencil to get sharpest piece of lead on writing surface.
- Metal tip provides better balance than cheaper plastic pencils.

I also own the GraphGear 1000 and the Super Promecha mechanical pencils @ 0.3 mm, so that is what I am comparing this pencil to.

I have been pretty underwhelmed by this pencil, especially when comparing it to my other pencils. Here is a list of the issues I have seen with it:
- The eraser is small and essentially useless. I primarily use a full size eraser, so this not a major drawback, but if I don't feel like digging in my bag for my eraser I still use my pencils erasers.
- The pencil is entirely made of plastic and feels cheap (which I should be expected since it was <$7 when I bought it)
- The key feature, the 'Auto Lead Rotation' rotates the lead very slowly.
- The 'Auto Lead Rotation' seems to want me to hold the pencil at a more 'right' angle to the paper than I typically use a pencil
- I feel like I need to press harder for the auto-lead rotation to properly trigger and since this only has 0.3 mm lead I find that I am frequently breaking the lead.
- Finally, since the 'Auto Lead Rotation' is so slow, I find myself habitually trying to spin the pencil in my hands to get a better lead angle with the paper, which you are not supposed to do with this pencil.

In conclusion, I have to say it does everything it was advertised to do (dispenses 0.3 mm lead, auto rotates the lead, is made of plastic) however, the pencil just feels 'cheap' and the auto-rotation of the lead is too slow and finicky to be of use to me. This pencil will stay at home and get used only when I can't find one of my other pencils.

The Kuru Toga is a very stable pencil with a premium feel. It writes with great precision and gives a satisfying click when extending lead.

The feature that defines this pencil is the autorotation of the lead for a constantly sharp surface without the need to rotate the pencil itself. This feature iz compromised, probably most often, in the .3 model. We can safely assuming that users writing with lead as thin as .3 will not press down as hard on the paper as do grade schoolers. The problem is that the actuation force needed to trigger a rotation is unreasonably high, especially at a non-right writing angle.

In short, buying the Kuru Toga for its primary feature will be disappointing. It does do it job as a .3 pencil, but with its feature rendered useless, there are cheaper options

As a freelance illustrator, .3mm lead is all I use. Unfortunately I lost my gorgeous drafting pencil, and had to search the market for something new. I purchased this, and the big boy name brand Pentel. Personally, the Uni Kurutoga beats Pentel by a landslide. While some people enjoy a heftier feel I felt the pentel was too heavy and strangely balanced. The uni glides easily across the page, and I find the grip much more comfortable than the textured metal of the Pentel. When you're drawing 10+ hours a day comfort is a must. The rotating lead doesn't give any discernible difference while drawing to me, but I bought this pencil for it's superior make not this rotating gimmick. Very sleek, the only feature Pentel beats it with is the retractible tip- useful for not stabbing yourself with the thin metal in your pocket and for not bending or damaging the pencil.

This pencil is the best and most comfortable pencil I've ever used. Any time I'm stuck using abother pencil, it's just not the same. It's smooth and makes amazing lines. I love not having to twist it in my hand constantly. I definitely recommend it!
