A Kid's Review on December 13, 2007
Size: Large 48x20"
Before I bought these scat mats, I read many reviews that either said the mat was inhumane (and some people refuse to use it) OR the mat was the most incredible invention ever. Below is my review and hopefully it will help someone else decide if it is a good idea to purchase the mat, or not.

First of all, I begin by saying, the mat works. There is no question about it. However how well it works, and where, and to what degree are all the variables that depend on YOU, the user as well as on the subject, your PET, cat or dog.

Tall/Smart Dog
I had a 40 lb bulldog (a temporary house guest) who was quite tall (even for bulldogs, because I think he is mixed) and the dog was able to jump over a scat mat I placed in a doorway. It was only the second time the bulldog encountered the mat, and he was smart enough to know what to do. He took one leap and was already in the other room (where the Christmas tree, which I was trying to protect, was located). Therefore in the case of taller dogs (especially the ones that know how to jump very well) you may need to set down two mats (one next to another) rather than just one mat, to increase the surface area of the mat - that way the dog will never try to jump it.

Smart but Short Legged and Lazy Dog
My own bulldog, who is also 40 lbs but short and stumpy and lazy, NEVER tries anything with the mat in the same doorway. (Please not when you place mat in doorway it needs to completely cover the entire entrance - if there is space for the dog to get through without stepping on the mat, he or she will try it). When the mat is in the door way, it doesn't matter if there is a steak on the other side of the mat, my short legged bulldog will not even bother to try to go on, or near it.

My cat had me at wits end. He wanted to be on the counters all the time. I'd come home to find cat litter on the counter which is gross. Tried using the xmats which have plastic spikes on them (he got used to them and walked all over them). Then I decided he would not win the war and got one of these shock pads(the shock is mild depending on how you set it). All it took was one time jumping on this and he got the surprise of a lifetime. He stays clear now. The secret is to put it where the cat likes to jump to then once they learn to avoid that spot move it to the next place they choose to jump up to. I think they remember the spots to avoid (at least my cat did). This product is made of cheap materials but it works and thats what counts. I highly recommend to owners of stubborn cats.

Bought this to keep a early rising cat out of the bedroom. All of the other devices I created were easy for the smart cat to figure out. I sometimes feel like Wiley Coyote running to the ACME Hardware with yet another devious means of foiling the cat, keep in mind I can't shut the door due to the cat scratching the carpet.

The Scat Mat worked great for two weeks, then the smart cat figured out how to jump across the mat. So I turned it lengthwise, no good, cat, using advanced calculus, figured out escape velocity and altitude and once again made it in. Not to be outsmarted by the cat, I, using basic math skills, calculated the landing point for the cat and put a mat down that the cat does not like. So far I feel smarter than a cat, for how long, I don't know.

The answer to months of prayers!

We bought this scat mat as an absolute last resort. Our ultimate problem was our cats want to go outside, but we don't allow them to. Since we have a dog who has access to a dog door, we have to keep the cats in a spare room when the dog has unlimited access to her dog door. The cats started scratching at the door and ruining the carpet. We got this scat mat to lay down at the door and they zapped themselves a few times and now stay CLEAR of the scat mat all together, regardless of where it is. Since they've learned to hate the mat, we turn it off, and they still stay clear. This only took zapping themselves about 4 times (our girl cat was smart, it only took her once to hate it. Her stubborn brother though took 5 good zaps before he learned, but he learned!)

The ultimate test... we put the scat mat in front of our dog door, and turn it off (as to not zap the dog by mistake). Since the cats already know they hate the mat, they try and figure out a way to get to the door without stepping on the mat, but it's pretty impossible (unless they're Dr. Evils cat or something), so the dog door stays open, scat mat goes in front (off), dog can go outside freely (without fear of zapping) and cats think it's on so they stay away. I am one happy cat owner! I've attached a photo of Ms. Temperance day dreaming of escaping, but not tempting that mat!

Now I know I'm a bit larger than a cat, but I touched this thing and it does not hurt... it's a weird uncomfortable feeling, but I am not concerned that it harms them in anyway. It's a much more humane solution than declawing your cats.

I have two cats who are both about to turn 9 years old. These cats were my first "babies" and I love them dearly. They have been with me since my very first apartment. In September of 2011 my fiance and I moved to a nice, new place and began preparing for the arrival of our first child. That's when the problems began. My one cat began peeing on the couch daily. She would also stand at the bedroom door every night and scratch repeatedly. We had to stop letting her sleep in bed due to her new nickname Miss Pee's A Lot! My fiance begged me to find new homes for the cats. He asked me to de-claw them or make them outdoor cats. I looked into the possibility of all these options but ultimately decided that I loved my middle aged babies and they wouldn't fare well in a new home or without their claws. We bought spray repellents, noise makers, homeopathic calming treats. NOTHING ELSE WORKED. Then I came across the scat mat. I was hesitant at first due to the electric shock but I ultimately purchased one mat and instantly fell in love with this product. She stopped scratching at the door! During the day when we were at work we put the mat on the couch. She stopped peeing on the couch! We ended up purchasing 3 mats for our house. The cost was a bit much but worth every penny. These mats saved my relationship, my sanity and my couch! And the best part is we don't even turn them on anymore. The cats stay far away from the scat mat and our son crawls around freely without any worry of being shocked.
