I'm using three of these outdoors under the eaves of my house (out of the weather, they aren't weather resistant) to extend and redirect three PAR-20 recessed bulb fixtures, and it works perfectly for me. If you can find the right size pool-noodle (Polyethylene closed-cell foam 2.5 inch rod) you can use short sections of that to plug-up the 2.5 inch hole left by the missing PAR-20 bulb, which should prevent birds and bugs (snow, etc.) from entering the fixture. Specified length of the metal extension tube is 4.5 inches, and for my recessed fixtures the swivel-head sticks out about an inch or two beyond the soffet, which is perfect for me. The swivel works in both axis, so it is possible to easily rotate and tilt the light. Power rating listed on the package is 660 Watts, and the plastic housing where the bulb attaches seems to me that it's a thermoset plastic so it shouldn't melt. It's not ceramic, but it seems reasonably substantial. I'm using 8 Watt LED floods, so melting isn't an issue for me. It does rattle a little bit, but I think that's to allow for thermal expansion so the plastic won't crack. Once I closed the hole in the original fixture with the polyethylene foam everything was pretty solid. (The socket in the original recessed fixture floats, so it was kind of rickety until I plugged the PAR-20 opening) Overall, this has been a great choice for my application, and the build quality was better than I expected.

Btw, I didn't really use a pool-noodle... I used three 2-inch pieces of a "Diono Sit Rite Car Seat Installation Aid, Grey" that I drilled with a 1/2" hole and slit to put it over the metal tube. The Diono part is a dense Polyethylene foam rod that I bought as an add-on from Amazon for about $3.50.

Please note when purchasing this product the comment about extending the bulb 4.25 inches is only the length of the metal portion of the arm and does not include the socket at the end of the poll. That added another 3 inches. So if you are using this with recessed lighting be sure to measure carefully.

My complaint is with the labeling not the product. That is why I gave it three stars.

I recently put up a display in the basement on the wall that was poorly lit. There are can lights in the ceiling but I didn't want to sacrifice one of them. Fortunately there was also a standard light socket near the wall that was the perfect location (sort of) for a spotlight. These base extenders are the perfect solution as you can just screw it in the socket and add a small spot or flood bulb. These will adjust in any direction and even if you're just a bit off left to right and it's tight in the socket, this will 'ratchet' and give you a bit more turn to get the aim just right. genius!

If you are planning to install this fixture in the basement, go for it. Otherwise, no. It is a combo of a very nice arm extender combined with a cheap quality swivel socket. The swivel features a dirty off white plastic housing with halves not fitting together. I had to wrap the housing in white plastic tape. Poor craftsmanship

This allows one to point a light at a location other than down. It is a little wobbly at installation but once installed it does what it is intended. An item for consideration - consider that you will have a large hole in the fixture where the bulb used to be. you might haver to acquire/make a cover to make things look aesthetically pleasing.

The coolest gadget! I have a can light just in front of the fireplace, but all it does is shine directly downward. With this wonderful gizmo, I was able to add a small halogen spot and point it towards the art above the fireplace. It simply screws in and is just long enough to drop to ceiling height. Voila!

Great way to light art work on a wall from a installed can light. Suggest using LE® PAR20 LED Bulb, Dimmable Flood Light Bulb, 7W(50W Equivalent), 3000K(Warm White), 500lm, 40° Beam Angle, Medium Base(E26), Energy Star LED Light Bulbs, UL Listed Spotlight. Combination makes a modestly wide angle on wall 6 feet from can light with an 8 foot ceiling.

We have outdoor landscaping lights in the eve's of our house. We recently had an S shape curving stone landscape wall built close to the end of our house. I wanted to light it up without running electrical work. I took the bulb out of the recessed light fixture in the eve and replace it with this extender. I pointed it to the wall and it did a perfect job of enhancing the wall a night. the wall was about 40 to 45 feet from the lighting.
