Directions for Use
To cut gift wrap, insert paper into cutter at desired cut location. Hold paper in place next to cutter and push forward to cut. To curl ribbon, place ribbon between thumb and ribbon curling edge. Pull ribbon across curling edge at an angle while applying light pressure with thumb.

I'm not a gadget person when it comes to simple things. Take scissors, I'm pretty happy with my old Fiskars. When this little cutter came available through Vine right before Christmas, I was looking at a mound of gifts and hours of wrapping, so I grabbed it.

I wasn't expecting much, but it's a great little tool. Very quick and easy to use, and cuts a much straighter line than scissors with less effort. The ribbon curler was also very easy to use and didn't shred the cheaper ribbon like sharp scissors tend to do.

If you have children, this would be perfect. Much better than child's scissors and they'll probably have fun using it.

Another good thing is if you do wrapping on the bed, there's no chance of accidentally cutting the bedspread (don't ask).

The only downside is the handle size is a bit small for comfort, a slightly larger handle would make it easier to use and less likely to get lost. Another good update would be a bright yellow color so it wouldn't get lost so easily.

Overall, a wonderful new gadget, and one I'll use quite often!

This is probably the most complex and nuanced review of a simple product -- a blade on a stick -- you'll ever read. But I used to review hi-fi equipment, so I'm used to this sort of thing. I ordered the Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter because I had a pile of Christmas presents to wrap, and it arrived just in time.

3M would like you to think that cutting wrapping paper is clumsy and frustrating. The ads show a pair of scissors jamming and crumpling the paper, to the tune of stuttering Tchaikovsky. The Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter, on the other hand, sails through its cutting chores all jaunty-jolly, without a moment's hesitation, or damage to the paper.

The truth is more complex.

If you have trouble cutting paper with scissors it's because the scissors aren't sharp. The Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter is sharp out of the package, so that solves one problem. How long the Cutter's razor blade will /stay/ sharp is another matter. There's no way to replace the blade (it would be clumsy and unsafe to do so), so 3M expects you to replace the Cutter when it dulls. (The $7 price is ridiculous -- you'd expect a package of three or four for that price -- and would purchase a decent pair of scissors.)

Most paper has a "grain", as you've noticed when tearing coupons out of the newspaper. It tears easily one way, but rips the other way. The Cutter is worse than scissors when cutting across the grain. The scissors slice (more or less) vertically through the paper, while the Cutter pushes /against/ it. It jammed and crumpled the paper several times.

There's no question that the Cutter is significantly /faster/ when cutting a flat sheet of paper along the grain. If you have a large number of packages to wrap, it could save time. But for occasional wrapping, a sharp pair of scissors works just as well. My Cutter will get most of its use extracting newspaper coupons.

This product is really kind of cool. It is a new twist on cutting wrapping paper with a scissor. This little item allows the user to cut wrapping paper with a single stride. In addition, it cuts in a straight line, for the most part. The only suggestion I have when using this product is to use your hand to keep the wrapping paper steady. If not the paper will slide and this cutter will stall, so to speak. The only reason I note this issue is because on the TV ads the cutter just glides along its "merry" way with no aid. It was my experience that this wasn't the case. Overall, a good product that I would recommend to anyone who is going to wrap a present.
