This review is of the Kensington Dual Monitor Adapter (model # K33907US) which I purchased at Amazon. That model appears similar to the Kensington Universal Multi-Display Adapter (model # K33928US), but there may be some technical differences.

I should mention that I've used multiple monitors for years, and if you haven't used them with your computer, you really, really should. They improve efficiency greatly when running multiple active applications, and are one of the most significant and easiest upgrades you can make. And this reasonably priced Kensington model makes multiple monitor installation a cinch.

As mentioned, installation is very simple. First, install the device drivers from the installation CD. Secondly, connect the monitor to the Kensington adapter. Thirdly, connect the adapter in turn to one of your computer's USB ports. Finally, reboot your computer - the new monitor should start working immediately. You can then configure the resolution and layout of your monitors via Windows Control Panel.

I used this adapter with my 14-inch laptop, which runs Windows Vista and already has a built in VGA port for a second monitor. This way I can use two additional monitors plus the laptop monitor, for a total of three. One monitor is connected to the VGA port built into the side of the laptop and the other is connected via the Kensington adapter to a laptop USB port (see accompanying photo). I configured the three monitors to extend the desktop over all three monitors, so I can move active windows to whichever monitor I want.

I love my Macbook Pro, but was so bummed when I could only utilize one external display along with it. I like symmetry and substantial space to spread out and view my documents, email, calendar, etc. This little device was the answer to my prayers. I'm running a 24 inch monitor at 1920x1200 off the native video card, and another 23 inch monitor off the Kensington USB Displaylink unit at 2048x1152. The Kensington is putting out a crisp, clear, and beautiful image, with no degradation of quality. Doesn't work as smoothly for video, but for documents and normal business use, this thing is where it is at. Highly recommended.

If you've got a Macbook Pro and want to be able to have two external displays, this does the trick.

As others have mentioned, it's not suited for video playback or gaming, but for work-related things (programming, spreadsheets, word-processing, email, etc, etc) it works perfectly.

The one catch? If you're on 64bit OSX neither the drivers on the included CD nor the latest drivers available from Kensington work. They will refuse to install and say you're on an unsupported processor.

Working 64bit drivers are available from the *actual* manufacturer, which is DisplayLink

(I'm giving it 4 starts for that reason - I shouldn't have to hunt that down or contact them if I wasn't savvy enough to do so)

Install those, plug in the adapter, and you're good to go.

I have a Lenovo laptop, Windows pro 64bit, with an Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M card - it supports running 2 displays and the laptop is one of them. I wanted a 3rd display (so laptop display, and 2 external monitors), no can do with current card. I read about this type of device and started looking through them. Very first thing I wanted to know is if I could extend my desktop across all 3. A clone of one was no use to me. This does that. Then I noticed some wouldn't support 1920x1200 which was unacceptable for me, that led me to this one. During this time I was thinking what are the chances this is going to work right out of the box. The nvidia is driving 2 displays, the Kensington driving 1, those 2 existing in harmony seemed like something ripe for chaos. Well it works. 1920x1200 across all 3 displays, my desktop extended to all 3. Seems like 5 feet to move my mouse from the far left to the far right, really cool. It went down like this: I normally don't run install cd's, I find out first if Windows can do the work by itself. For some reason I had a feeling about not trying this time, glad I did, it needed a variety of drivers and then took care of the setup which involved a lot going on with the displays, turning sideways, switching around, off an on. When it was done all 3 displays came on. Ok so far. But one of them was a clone, ug. I had read in a review that the Windows display utility can arrange them, so I went there. I did not use the nvidia control panel, I figured it still only knew about 2 displays, not the 3rd. Sure enough within the Windows utility all 3 were sitting there. And yes, of the 2 external monitors one was set as a duplicate of the desktop, and one was an extension. I set Windows to extend to the duplicate, arranged them, clicked apply, and I was in business. Wow.Read more ›

The ordering, shipping and installation process of this unit was very quick and easy. The packaging was good and easy to remove and I was connected and well on my way to the second monitor in no time. And that's where the trouble started.

Apparently, the drivers for the Mac version are in Beta and it is something I overlooked when I placed the order. Things apparently work very well if you don't have the latest Mac. If you use this with the recent MacBook Pro with automatic graphics switching running Snow Leopard.. well, you can't actually use it. The basic problem is that if you are using the external monitor as the primary one (with the menu bar on it), disconnecting the monitor makes your computer hang. To be precise, the problem happens when you restart or wake up the computer from sleep the next time without the external monitor connected.

The suggested workarounds are to not keep the menu bar in the external monitor, not enable automatic graphics switching or not using an external monitor. None of this is appealing considering I bought this precisely to do stuff like this. I would have given one star but this looks to be a problem with DisplayLink technology that is used widely by other manufacturers as well. Kensington has this stuff at a good price point and the unit itself is made very well, so it gets 2 stars.
