This is a great little light except for the fact that the light will only go on in complete darkness, as per the instructions in bold type. I wanted to use it in a bathroom, however the lack of total darkness and the ambient lighting over my bath tub, even with the shower curtain closed, prevented it from triggering on

I solved this problem by modifying the unit's photocell which is located beneath the semi-transparent dome. Invert the unit on a soft cloth so as not to scratch the lens. Remove the "guts" of the unit by carefully releasing each of the four snap clips, adjacent to the batteries. This in effect removes the exterior case from the batteries and circuit board.

If you examine the circuit board, you will notice two components that sit below the milky dome. One is the circular motion detector and it has a small square window. The other adjacent component is the photocell which detects the ambient light level. It sits closer to the circuit board with a back and forth grid like element on its top.

This photocell must be completely isolated from receiving any light. Using black vinyl electrical tape, I cut small pieces of tape and placed them around the bottom of the photocell to cut off any light passing up through the circuit board and reaching the sensor. I even slid a small piece below the photocell, between its two leads just to be sure. Next I fashioned a small cylinder of tape just large enough to fit around the photocell. After closing off one end, I slid it over the photocell, kind of like a little hat and secured it into place.

Technically the photocell will now present only a small resistance to the circuit even in bright light. Assemble the unit taking care to position the milky dome back over the motion sensor and the photocell.

Mine now triggers on perfectly regardless of the ambient light in the bathroom when I stand in the bathtub to take a shower.

Quick Fix - Thanks for all of the comments and ideas. The light sensor can also be completely removed without any long-term effects, as long as it is done carefully and the motion sensor is not damaged. We have instructions and a photo if anyone is interested - just email info@mrbeams.com. Takes about 3 minutes. We also just launched the new Mr. Beams website and there are many instructional videos and brightness comparisons.

We have a very dark closet in our hallway that needed some light in it. The thought of running wire, boxes and messing with drywall made me cringe so I searched for alternatives. There were a few other well reviewed options on Amazon but people seemed disappointed with the amount of light output. This was the only one that quantified the light output of 100 lumens which is pretty good for a battery powered LED light.

Installation is very easy. Be aware that this light takes 4 C cell batteries. Thankfully I had some on hand. The batteries make the unit too heavy for mounting tape...velcro might be okay. However I opted for the supplied screws and anchors. This makes me confident the light won't come crashing down on my head.

Now for the bad. Because the light uses a fish-eye type of lens to distribute the light it causes a strange prism effect. The light itself is white but at the edges the lens causes it to be yellow. I uploaded a picture to show what I'm talking about. It's not the end of the world but it's not something I expected.

Beyond this small hiccup the light works great. It comes on when the door is opened turning off about 30 seconds later. Given the choice between this and a wired light alternative I'll take this one all day. It only took 10 minutes to install. That's much nicer than cutting drywall, running wire, mounting a new light, patching, mudding, sanding and painting.

*** UPDATE ***
Soon after installing the light it seemed to be constantly on. A few test revealed it would come on as soon as it turned off. This was due to some older batteries I used. Replacing the batteries with new ones returned it to normal operation. It also made me realize just how bright the light actually is.Read more ›

When I moved in to my new house, I was disappointed to find that the master shower was completely enclosed and had NO LIGHTS!! I spent months trying to find a viable, waterproof LED to mount in there, and this fit the bill perfectly. At first, I was skeptical that 1 bulb could provide enough light for an entire shower stall, but this thing is great! I was even able to use double sided exterior mounting tape to fasten it to the ceiling instead of having to drill through my tile. if you are looking for a cheap and easy method to install some lighting in your shower, this is the way to go. 100% satisfied!!

Had one for about a year when the motion sensor stopped sensing!
It just stayed on all the time. Tried fresh batteries, still didnt work.

It was a great light while it lasted. Plenty bright enough to light up my
dark hallway, and the light would stay on long enough for me to navigate around.

There are no adjustments or switches at all on this model.
When you put the batteries in, it's on, when you take them out, it's off!!
Thats it!!

My other motion sensor lights (different brand) at least have controls to switch
from allways on, or automatic sensor mode, or power off.
This unit has none of that, just bare bones and basic.

I am sure, after reading all the good reviews for this unit, that I just
got a lemmon (it happens sometimes).

I am giving this model a second chance, ordered a new one. I really like this
design, and the bracket is already attached to my ceiling.
So I would rather replace it and hope for the best, then remove the bracket and
have to fill in the holes and repaint.

Since these units appear to be fairly well made, I am sure the second one will be
a good one, but if not, I will buy a different model and hopefully it will cover up
the holes left by the Mr Beam unit.

UPDATE Feb, 2012:
I did buy another one and the exact same thing happened.
Completely useless.
I have removed a star in this update due to 2 bad units.
