It's built tough with 12-ounce, 100-percent cotton sandstone duck. Rib-knit storm cuffs help keep the cold out. There are two interior pockets, two exterior pockets, and a left-chest pocket that zips shut. The main seams are triple-stitched for extra strength, and the bi-swing back design and pleated elbows add comfort.12-ounce, heavyweight, 100-percent cotton sandstone duck Field-Tested Sherpa lining in body, quilted-nylon lining in sleeves Attached Sherpa-lined hood

This jacket is great. I love it. I recommend not buying one on-line until you have tried one on in person. The sizes in the different products are different. For example in the "active jac" the M is super huge and the small is perfect, while in the "sierra" the small is too small and the M is perfect. Most stores don't carry anything smaller then L, so finding one in a store is nearly impossible. After going to many stores I finally found examples of every size, although in bizarre or undesirable colors, which gave me confidence to buy one on-line.

    *** OVERALL IMPRESSION ***
I am really pleased with this jacket and expect to use it for years to come. I was looking for something mid-weight for fall and early spring, and I think I've found it. Comfortable, warm, good looking, incredibly well made, and surprisingly well-priced. Add some layering and you could wear this through the winter in many climates.

    *** FIT & FORM ***
This jacket has an excellent, trim fit. I'm 5'11", 165 lbs, and most of Carhartt's products are cut for my more...rotund brethren. No bulging beer belly here. I ordered a medium and it fits well with room for some layering. The back has some pleats so you have a full range of motion. Really good pockets; the main outer ones are at the right height for your hands, and the angle ensures stuff won't fall out. The zippered breast pocket is a must. Inside, there are two good sized pockets, one zippered, one velcro. The cuffs are fantastic - elastic inside keeps out the wind and weather, but the sleeve extends over it. This does two things: (i) insulated gloves will fit over the elastic but under the sleeve, improving the seal, and (ii) it looks better than just plain elastic. That, combined with the straight bottom makes for a much cleaner, 'stylish' design.

    *** MATERIAL & CONSTRUCTION ***
This is typical Carhartt construction. If you've bought their stuff before, you know what I mean. If you haven't, that roughly translates to 'build like a tank'. You could wear this thing on job sites for years before it would be any worse for the wear. It's double- or triple-stitched where it needs it. Tough, rugged exterior (although this 'sandstone duck' is softer and less restrictive than their normal heavy canvas) will block the wind. A little waterproofing spray will help keep off the rain and snow. The fleece-like liner is cozy and warm. Solid, heavy zippers won't crap out on you.

My body type: 6'3" and 190 lbs. I'm pretty tall and slender. If you are similar to this, PLEASE look into buying a medium-tall instead of just a medium. The jacket goes down to my belt line and not an inch farther. Any bending over and my body is exposed. Not ideal.

Anyway, I should have read the description better. The sherpa lining is only in the body and the sleeves are plastic nylon quilt. I don't know about you, but I absolutely hate sleeves like this. They don't have a lot of insulation so my arms get cold fast. I spoke with a Carhartt rep and he said that no jacket they make has sherpa lining down into the sleeves. Maybe I'm missing something, but that's where I want it most.

After some struggling with both the sleeves and length, I decided to return this jacket and instead get the Traditional Sandstone Duck Arctic Quilt. While the style is slightly different, they had it in Medium-Tall and the insulation is at least consistent throughout the jacket.

As for performance, Carhartt has a well-deserved reputation of being the cold-weather jacket. If you work in a cold area with lots of wind, a Carhartt is the jacket for you.

My husband loves his old Carhartt jacket, but it has seen better days. It still has a lot of life left in it, but it's just showing its age, so he needed a new one for going out. He's 5'6" and 160 lbs. The large fits him perfectly; not too snug, with plenty of room for a layer or two underneath. We love the grey color as well. These jackets are about as close to indestructible as you're going to get. Trust me, this husband of mine goes through clothes and shoes like you would not believe, but his old Carhartt has managed to stay in one piece for something like 10 years.
I'm so impressed that I even ordered one for myself in the ladies' style and I can't wait until it's cold enough to wear it.

I haven't owned a good coat in years, so this thing was the best present I could get for myself. In Texas weather it's the heaviest coat I will ever need but it's also good for days that aren't so cold. I expected the lining to be softer but it's extremely warm and doesn't itch so no complaints. I love the pockets both inside and outside. One inside one has a Velcro closure and the other one zips shut. The two on the front keep my hands extremely warm and there's still room for the various junk I stuff in my pockets. I was nervous about the sleeves because I'm accustom to the elastic type that cling to you, but it turns out these have that inside of what can be seen on the picture. It's great because it keeps the cold wind out. I work nights on a farm so I couldn't be happier with the quality and warmth. My first night wearing it I was bitten on the back by a horse. Not only did it not damage the coat but also kept my skin from being broken. :) I bought the Army Green because the color was on sale and I absolutely love it. I prefer it over the normal Carhartt color because it isn't as common.
