Totally adorable and a huge hit at all the Christmas parties. The XL fit my 35lb Australian Shepherd mix like a glove and she's usually a Large (only XL in smaller running clothes), so I'd definitely go up a size if you're on the line. My biggest compliment is on the hat! How often do you get dog hats that have no more ability to balance on a dog's head than a birthday hat? This one has three elastic bands: one that goes under the chin and two that go around the ears. It isn't tight on the ears so my pooch didn't mind it, but it was enough support that when she moved her head up, down, and around, the hat didn't fall right off or slide to her neck.
The wristlets for her front paws were my only problem, as she seemed to enjoy pulling the pom-poms off one by one, but otherwise the costume stayed in tact and I anticipate being able to use it again next year. I added a photo to the reviews so you can see the costume "in action".

This is adorable on my Maltese (regular sized Maltese, 12lbs)! I bought a Medium first, which was WAY too big and had the flat felt red dots instead of the balls. I returned and then purchased a Small through this seller on Amazon (Rubies Costume Company) , and received a costume that was about 2 sizes smaller than the Medium. But it fits and is very cute. Not sure my dog thinks so ...

I followed the chart that says Maltese is a size M. It's way too big for my Maltese. Her chest is 14in and her neck to tail is 16in so I found that I should have ordered a Small. However, the Medium costume was really baggy on her, and she couldn't walk in it. I'm thinking an XS may have been better since she normally wears and XS. The paw straps are elastic and not velcro so they are too loose, they would just slide off her feet. The hat was the only thing that was doable as you can tie the elastic straps to make it a little smaller. I think it may be a hit or miss for this costume. Maybe it would be best to measure your dogs chest before deciding on the size. So sad, it would have been a good costume, even if it was not like the picture they provided..
