By Dave VINE VOICE on March 16, 2011
I have played the guitar and other instruments for a little over 50 years. I have a collection of fine guitars that is modest in number but consists of some of the best instruments made. I am retired and play my music in a studio in my home that contains only two amplifiers and all the audio equipment necessary for a high grade amateur studio. One of these amplifiers is an old Fender Princeton; the other is a Line 6 Spider IV 150. I have not played professionally since the 70's because I decided to use my energy to become successful in business. Even though I have not played professionally for a long period of time, I have kept on top of the technology that is now available to guitarists that were only a dream in 1970. During my 50 years of playing I have played on many guitar amplifiers, all of which were supposed to be the "best" but rarely did they ever meet my quest for quality of sound regardless of price. I must say that the Line 6 Spider IV 150 combo amp is, in my opinion, the best value in guitar amplifiers I have ever come across for the following reasons:

1) The 150 watt amplifier section is powerful and permits high volume playing of clean sounds that remain clean. I assume it is a high current amp because of the nature of the delivery of its power.

2) The ability to produce many sounds through on board effects surpasses any other amp I have played.

3) The efficient use of controls on the face of the amp allows one to play and use all of the effects in an understandable system of controls which actually reduces the number of knobs by making many of them multipurpose controls that really are easy to use.

I have to agree with all the positive comments previously made about this amp. This amp certainly kicks butt. It's really loud, can give you a guitar sound like almost anything, and as a combo amp has a real meaty tone. There were some comments about direct recording. I recently put a video on YouTube with a song I recorded called Orion's Belt. Find it by searching Petepopgtr1. The guitar sound comes from a Jackson Dinky XL plugged into this amp. The 1/4 headphone out then went direct into my computer. Cakewalk software was used. This will give you a good idea of what this amp sounds like going straight into a board or computer. You can't beat the different array of sounds and tones that you can pull out of this amp.

Versatility is unreal... Right out of the cardboard box, just plug it in and there is the sound.... I've always preferred the sound of a tube amplifier over a solid state till I heard this one... Even playing at decibels of thunder, the tone of this amp does not disappear which always seemed to happen with all of the other solid state amps I've ever owned. The range of the gain from complete crystal clean to liquid distortion with unending sustain is unreal... Where was this amp 30 years ago?! I would have saved a fortune in all the stuff I bought in trying to "find that tone"... One more thing, the combination of the tone of the amp along with all the built right in effects, the stereo sound which is unreal, the" tap" feature and the endless pre-sets you can tweak, then add a foot pedal on top to control it make this the only amp that I'll ever need... Yeah, a guitar player's dream....

The Line 6 amp has awesome quality, smart looks and great sound. It has great response and with so many different sound effects to choose from and that you can tweak to find the sound or style you're looking for... you won't ever get bored. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a small but powerful amp that's also is easy to pick-up, move around or just go out on the road with, This is it.

This big boy rocks. If you want to wake up the neighborhood then invest in this amp. It's well worth the money. Along with the additional footboard the possibilities are endless. This amp has so many presets and features that I'm thinking about getting a degree from MIT so I can use all the features.

I bought this amp because I like messing up with different effects. And it was on sale.
Well, I think the idea of this amp is really cool, but there are some annoying things:
1. The pitch shifter is quite terrible (im using also mkII shortboard), but I think nobody wants to use that seriously
2. You can update amps software only through Line 6 foot controllers (you cannot not connect amp to computer, you must connect foot controller to amp and computer at the same time and thats the only way for amp-computer connection)
3. I have crashed amp software for atleast 3 times. Okay, Im kinda stupid doing this, but still. One way to do it, is press tuner and then turn on some pedals and play on all strings, other way is something similar but instead of tuner, activate pitch shifter
4. No fx loop. Oh, come on, this is so stupid, if you have some modulation pedals.
5. As I mentioned I have some pedals. It feels like the amp is somehow compressing or lowering the signal, when you boost it with pedal. After a half way of level knob on my overdrive, the loudness doesnt change. And sometimes it creates situation when the same thing played clean sounds louder than through a pedal. Also overdrive pedals sounds kinda weird, but you can expreminent with knobs and create something usable. It would be really annoying if you find right settings on overdrive pedal and then play on other amp where it sounds totally different.
6. MKII shortboard. I really hoped that for 200 euros will be able to configure my foot controller to control the amp as I would like, but it seems, that there is one default way and you can't chang it.

Over all, it is good amp, but I would suggest to get smaller version and use it as practice amp. Or if you are not tone nerd and like to be able to make different sounds really cheap and without buying additional effect pedals, then this is the right for you.
