The Texas York Nutsheller design that I recieved two months ago has been seriously cheapened.

I'm an engineer. I compared the new sheller design to my old shellers which have worked well on native pecans until I wore them out. The new design has a shallower angle and the Phillips screws which hold the cutting plates on the sloped jaws are extremely short. They continually loosen, and are not capable of holding the plates firmly in place. These screws have only about 1/3 the thread depth of the rugged screws used on past shellers.

In order to make this poor quality Texas York Sheller work, I had to lay a strip of thick paper under the outer side to increase the slope of the cutting plates, but since the screws kept loosening, even this was not satisfactory. So, I had to repair an older Texas York Sheller in order to continue shelling the 125-150 lbs of native pecans for the past two months.

I would definitely NOT recommend anyone buy this product. It is an extremely poor product - the company must return the Texas York Sheller to the original design to regain it's very good quality shelling capability. This would appear to be an inferior "knock-off product" made by some other company than Texas York Sheller Co.

I tried to locate the Texas York Sheller Company to lodge a complaint, but could not access their contact information through Google or other search engines.

I first saw this on YouTube and it looked very easy. My pecans are on the smaller end of the average size so I couldn't put them in the cracker and 'crack', but I could snip the shell from the nut. I think it tends to get easier once a technique is developed. I read a simple tip online that suggests you boil the nut in the shell for about 10 minutes. This softens the shell and made an amazing difference! I boil about 15 and while I'm cracking those, boil the next 15. Once they are all cooled off, they seem to lose that benefit of boiling. But WOW! Perfect pecan halves about 95 percent of the time! I have not used another nut cracker that I would recommend to anyone, but I sure would recommend this one. I have tried the Drosselmeyer, which is a higher end priced one and I have tried the simple silver plier type, which is the cheapest. Not impressed. This is the one for me.

UPDATE: I stopped boiling them when I got the hang of how to hold them and I actually got pretty good! It did help to boil though, softened the shell till I got used to it.

I never thought I would ever say "They sure don't make thing like the use to" but in this case it is true. I used my granfathers old Texan Nut Sheller, it has got to be 10-15 years old and it is still far better than the one I just bought. The teeth on the one I just bought are dull and just slides off of the end of the pecan without even cutting the shell.

I was pleasantly surprised to find how easy it is to shell walnuts with this pliers style nut cracker with padded handles--even with arthritis! The job goes faster because shell & nut meats alike break into fewer pieces, making it simple to sort out the nuts from the debris. I recommend that you buy replacement jaws as this part of the cracker is thin. Who knows how long they will last with this level of performance?
The nut cracker worked much better than the chrome-plated [or at any rate silver-colored] pot metal ones sold in grocery stores-- I've experienced broken handles with 3 of that style nut cracker over the last several months despite light to moderate use. This device is built like a tool rather than a toy. However, don't expect a decorative utensil to grace your holiday table--the styling is straight out of Ace Hardware.

It is'nt made like my old one, the old one was all steel and did'nt have any plastic
on it. The blades are'nt as sharp as the old one was. I have had my old one 50 years
so they dont make things these days like they did back then. They think you have to
put plastic on everything.
Thanks for my review:

the design is great . i have two old texan yorks that were made in the usa . they have done a great job for 40 - 50 years .that is why when they started to show some ware and getting dull , i ordered the new texan yorks . however the new tekan yorks are made in china . i had to sharpen all three of them before i could use them . i kept one and the other two were gifts . the workmanship of the blades is vere poor . there is not a good inspection process for the blades . the body parts are very good . there needs to be an inspection process in the usa . there is a reason yall order stuff from china , its cheap . cheap in cheap out . i had to make a jig so i could sharpen the blades myself . you ashed me and i told you . if you want more let me know . jimmy lewis

This Nut sheller works great!! Our chief nut cracker (my husband)uses it while watching T V at night. The pecans come out whole nearly every time. A great tool!

Disappointed in these. These are not near as good as the ones I bought several years ago. Couldn't find my old ones so decided to order another one for me. The quality of these are not near as good. The one I received was a different color than the one shown in the picture.

I'm concerned about how often the blades will have to be replaced on these because of the quality.

The front of the package has red, white and blue with a white star. They have the company's name on the product but these are actually made in China. It isn't stamped on the product itself, It is printed on the back of the packaging, that it is made in China.
