I have an older fireplace that over time has developed cracks and chips in the fire box that I felt should be sealed, so I purchased this product. Then purchased two more to finish the job.

The can you see here is about as large as a mug, so do be aware that it is really only for patching cracks, not for re-surfacing an entire fireplace (it's not in a large bucket).

I cleaned as best I could and used a putty knife to apply this stuff, then let it dry as suggested on the can (24 hrs). Then, I ran a fire in the fireplace. To my dismay, the material wanted to slowly form bubbles. When the fire was out, the bubbles had hardened into a rough surface. It looks like the cracks are still sealed fine, but it doesn't look all that great. I did this again, except waited an entire week before running a new fire, with the same results.

It's possible that I didn't clean the fire box as well as I could have, and therefore this material wasn't able to adhere as well as it should have. Or perhaps I wasn't able to squeeze as much of the material into the cracks as I needed to, allowing the bubbles to form underneath.

Whatever the reason, it didn't work out quite as well as I had hoped, but since I'm not convinced it's the fault of this product, I'm only subtracting one star.

Used to repair kamado, an ancient version of the green egg. Used to repair
cracks in a kamado, and its fire ring. Thought about buying a green egg,
but when I saw the price, I tried the Furnace cement. It worked and fired it up a
couple of times without food before using it.

No instructions on how to apply for best effect. Did a ton of research online, and painstakingly cleaned the surfaces for application. If you use it as directed, it will peel off. It works relatively decently, but the cured consistency and strength is reminiscent of rust formed on a car body: rust might be strong, but you touch it and it crumbles right off.

My best guess on the best way to apply this without it flaking off would be to mix it with a mixture with sand, plaster of paris, and a small amount of pea gravel. Afterward, you might be able to clean the surface without losing the texture so that you can use the small sprinkling of pea gravel to get a better grip on it. You'd lose some of the thermal efficiency with the thick mixture but if it had an absurd amount of cleaned texture to grip onto, it *should* take the thermal expansion and retraction a bit better and not bounce off of the material. KEEP IN MIND: I have not tested this yet, and the plaster of paris itself is somewhat brittle (hence the sand addition) but with the right portions and the right person, it might be a good way to make this work a bit better.

We had a crack in our firebox insert's floor running the whole length left to right - ants were even coming up through it! I applied the cement as directed with a metal putty knife, waited a few days for it to fully cure, then built fires as normal. Looks to me like it worked just as I expected it to.

Initially the color is dark gray, but after you have a fire and it cures and builds up a layer of ash, the color becomes a light gray. It almost matches our concrete floor exactly - we don't even notice the color difference.

i followed exact directions for this product, and with in the first fire, all this mortar fell apart and crumbled. i used 3 tubes of this and applied it in several different stages in thin layers as directed, i let the product cure for 3 days before i had lit a fire and it states it will set in 24 hours. i do not recommend this product

I bought this after I replaced the old venting pipe on my water heater to seal the portion that goes into the chimney. The product works very well nice and stickey but easy to clean up if you get it on you.

We bought this to fix some cracks in our outdoor brick oven. It appears to have done the job nicely.

I used this to piece back together they chimney portion of my chiminea... I had little hope of it even working, but it's held together so far! Easy to work with and dries pretty quickly, as well.
