For organists any new recording of the big and beautiful Wanamaker organ is a significant event. In the present case we have not only the organ, played by its current master (Peter Richard Conte), but also the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble (a quintet). The occasion is the Christmas season, and the CD, recorded digitally in the summer of 2008 at Macy's in Philadelphia, is called "Christmas in the Grand Tradition." It is a 69-minute collection of 17 mostly familiar, Christmas-themed pieces for organ with or without brass from traditional and composed sources. (See detailed track listing below.) The package is an attractive 3-part cardboard foldout with several photos and illustrations, but rather brief notes.

The "Grand Tradition" may be somewhat overstated--not all the pieces are grand or showy in character--but the organ is certainly a grand instrument, the brass often add celebratory flourishes, and the music is mostly quite excellent. Mr. Conte is, by all accounts including the evidence of this disk, a very talented performer and arranger. The Philadelphia Brass Ensemble is a seasoned and able group whose members play here with clean precision, fine tone quality, and appropriate style. If you are looking for Christmas music of high quality, and especially if you're a lover of organs, brass, and their music, this CD may be just the thing to brighten your holidays.

The liner notes include adequate biographical sketches of Mr. Conte and the Brass, along with too brief a description of the great Wanamaker instrument. (The reader is referred to the Gothic Records website for a full list of stops, but Wikipedia offers a much more thorough description under "Wanamaker organ.") The music itself receives rather short shrift, including a few possibly misleading bits.

Kudos to Macy's for their dedication to preserving the incredible Wanamaker Organ. This recording (by Peter Conte) accompanied by the Philadelphia Brass will transport you to that great department store to hear the largest organ in the world.
I was in the store about 30 years ago and first heard this organ at a noon recital. The recording brings the same rich sound to you home stereo or quality headphones. And the Christmas theme completes the grand celebration!

I expected that the recording equipment and, especially, my sound system would no keep up with the organ, but I was still a bit disappointed. A couple passages sounded muddy. Maybe, however, that was my hearing. It's a whole lot short of being up to snuff.

Nice, but not great.

I first heard the Wanamaker organ in 1963 and never dreamed that 50 years later it would sound truly glorious and exciting as it does today. The arrangements on this CD are splendid and give ample space for PRC and the brass to exploit all the resources. It sounds really great on my Bose Wave machine and is the next best thing to getting on the train and going up to Philadelphia. This is one of the best Christmas organ CDs ever and bears many hearings over the course of the holiday season. It's right up there with the ones of Virgil Fox at Riverside and Alexander Schreiner at the Motab that have been reissued on CD.

As a long-time resident of Philadelphia, I've known the sound of this amazing instrument since I first heard it as a child. It seems, however, that this organ is a real "bear" to record. Perhaps the reason for this is the enormous extent of it and the fact that it plays into an horizontally restricted space. In any case, when a musical line of even moderate complexity is played, it is blurred by reverberation. In addition, the brass ensemble is often buried in this reverb. Maybe a team of scientists is required to record it clearly;
maybe nobody will ever get it right.

This is not to imply that there's any failure of musicianship here; all involved are first-rate.

By all means, if you're in Philadelphia, go listen to the Wanamaker Organ- you'll never forget it. However, there are many better recordings available featuring organ and brass Christmas programs.

I have two favourites on this CD, `Silent Night', the wonderful chimes and string sounds of the Wanamaker Orchestral Organ are out of this world and Mr. Conte's careful playing of the arrangement by Virgil Fox make it memorable. I also have the version played by Virgil on the great Aeolian Skinner at Riverside. In my opinion Mr Conte's version of `Silent Night' alone is worth the price of the CD.

The brass lead on O Holy Night is sympathetically played and entirely appropriate, the rich tones of the organ set it off perfectly. My only criticism is that more than just several tuneful pieces could have been included on the CD. Mr Conte's demonstration of control of the Wanamaker (also in `Winter's Night') is masterly, the recording quality on the disc is acceptable, better mixing might have been an improvement. I also like the fold out pack, no nasty plastic lid to shatter.

The acoustics of the Wanamaker building make recording the differing dynamic range of organ and brass together very difficult. Because of the range of frequencies involved, to avoid disapointment, very good sound equipment is essential to reproduce organ music. A graphic equaliser helps personal compensation/preference - remove hiss etc.
