I have used Behlen's Por-O-Pac for many years on the finest wood furniture made from mahogany and oak. The difference is this. The product has fine silica sand that has been ground to a powder form. Once it is applied correctly at a diagonal "X fashion across the grain using burlap, then scraped after drying and a second application is done to completely fill any voids. It forms an excellent stainable base which will last generations. I like using an analine dye that is water based since it does not cloud the grain as oil stains will do plus it is very lightfast as well. I strongly recommend any of the Behlens products! I feel they are the best products made for finishing. Their Rock hard table finish is a short oil molecule "real varnish" that is excellent to work with and the results are incredible.

This is pretty good stuff, but it needs a lot of work right out of the can. The liquid separated and I had to empty the entire can into another container to stir it and remix it before use. If applied too thickly, it takes a while to cure as well. But the end result is a nice, smooth, ready to paint surface.

DO NOT USE WITH LATEX!!!

This product is great at filling the grain, but DO NOT use it with latex paint. There is a warning on the can that recommends against it but says it's possible to use with latex paint. I'm just going to be direct and say don't use it. We are 2 layers of primer and 3 coats of paint into our project and we still have yellow leaking through all our white.

Overall it was messy and very time consuming but it made a huge difference in preventing all those black grain spots from showing through. You will not completely eliminate the grain but you will be able to eliminate the areas that the paint can't seep into.

The new quart can I received had completely settled out.

I tried mixing with a variable speed drill, but made a big mess because this drill would not spin slow enough. I went to my drill press and picked a very slow speed. It took 15 minutes of careful mixing on the drill press to get it mixed.

Once mixed, it seems to work ok. I am still experimenting on red oak to see what process is best.

I recommend the product as a good grain filler on oak, but I was disappointed I had to spend so much time re-mixing the can contents.

works very well, to mix contents I used a 6" bolt with 2 wing nuts screwed down to the bottom of the bolt. then with a battery powered drill mixed in the can in about 5 minutes, filled wood pores very well
