VR image stabilization in action
Nikon's Hybrid Optical lens shift and Electronic VR image stabilization systems combine to help produce blur-free images. High ISO 6400** capability allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement and camera shake. And, Nikon’s original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically shoots a series of sequential frames and saves the one with the sharpest focus.
* The camera selects and uses only the features required to optimize each image.
** ISO 3200 and 6400 are available only for image sizes of 3M (2048 x 1536) or smaller.

Nikon’s Smart Portrait System with Skin Softening
Face-priority AF helps produce more satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure for as many as 12 faces in the framed shot. Skin Softening function detects and analyzes a framed subject’s skin, and then adjusts smoothness to produce enhanced results. Smile Timer automatically releases the shutter when the subject smiles, while its Blink Proof function shoots two sequential frames, then saves the one in which the subject’s eyes are widest open. Blink Warning presents an alert when it suspects that someone in the shot has blinked. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.

Intelligent automated shooting modes that promote carefree shooting
Nikon’s Scene Auto Selector makes it faster and easier to capture the moment by eliminating the need to manually select a scene mode to match the intended shot. This intelligent function determines the subject, analyzes the surrounding settings, and then automatically selects the appropriate scene mode for optimal results. Subject Tracking enhances the shooting experience by following the subject’s movement to ensure clear focus and quick response when that special shutter opportunity presents itself. Subject Tracking even functions if the subject moves out of the frame for a second or two.

Quick Retouch
Quick Retouch automatically adjusts the contrast and saturation of selected photos to create an enhanced copy with the right finishing touch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Make sure to cap the Auto ISO setting to 80-200, November 19, 2009
I have not tried the S70 yet (so disregard star rating) but I have noticed several reviews with the other color models noting frustrations about poor image quality. I also saw in the CNET Editor's review that they suggested that the user sets the Auto ISO limit to 80-200 for best results in most conditions and 80-400 max under difficult lighting conditions. So anyone who is experiencing photo quality issues might want to try that to see if it has a dramatic improvement. CNET said the pictures were "very good for a snapshot camera" once those settings have been changed. My guess is for some reason the camera is trying to take a ridiculously high ISO (1200-6400) and producing grainier photos as a result. As Wikipedia explains regarding ISO speeds, "In both digital and film photography, the reduction of exposure corresponding to use of higher sensitivities generally leads to reduced image quality (via coarser film grain or higher image noise of other types)." If that is in fact the problem it would still be a design flaw but one with perhaps a simple and tolerable workaround.

From the CNET S70 review:
"The photo quality from the S70 is very good for a snapshot camera...The camera lets you limit the auto ISO range to either 80-200 or 80-400. If you're in daylight or bright conditions, I recommend locking it down to 80-200. Again, it did perform well through ISO 400, but it's at its best below ISO 200."
[...]

Good luck with that workaround.

I still like the specs of this camera so plan to check it out at the local Best Buy with my own SD card and I will be playing with these settings and I will update my review once I have.

5.0 out of 5 stars S 70 Review, December 24, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered one for my wife and one for me. After reading all the negative reviews on picture quality, I almost returned them on arrival. But I didn't and both me and my wife weer pleasantly amazed at the ease of use and high quality pictures we got immediately. I suspect people play with the settings and especially the high iso one and end of with less resolution for low light which may not be needed anyway. The auto function works extemely well as it select the best scene, focus and shutter. All our initial pictures were just perfect, even under less than idea conditions. For my book I give it an overall 4.5, and that is just because the camera is still new and still learning the full features, I would recommencd it as others have. None were blurred.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor operational design, December 26, 2009
As with most Nikon products the camera is made very well, but the S70 is not designed very well. Since the device has a touch-screen feature that interferes with taking pictures. The device should have a physical border that allows the user to hold the camera without activating the touch screen.
Myself and a number of family and friends tried using the camera, but we all the same issue with touch-screen interfering with picture taking. Nikon should have performed some additional usability tests with actual end-users, this is simple issue to resolve by either shrinking the touch-screen surface size in increase camera body size. Either solution would allow the user to hold the camera without touching the touch-screen.
