Stadaconé aka Stadacona was a name of an Iroquoian village settled on the St. Lawrence River in Quebec. It was also the name of the second and final album from Sloche, one of the great prog and fusion acts to come out of Quebec. This album was released in 1976 on RCA, and unsurprisingly the cover features Native artwork (First Nations) artwork, I assume in the Iroquoian style. But don't expect any Native influences in the music, it's much in the same style of J'un Oeil. Drummer Gilles Chiasson left the band to be replaced by André Robergé, with some extra percussion work from Gilles Ouellet. The presence of new guys hardly hurt the band, and like Gilles Chiansson before him, Robergé pretty much sticks to rock basics in his drumming. The rest of the band contains the same lineup as before (Caroll Bérard, Pierre Hébert, Martin Murray, Réjean Yacola). The jazzy influence is perhaps a bit stronger here, but as before the band was never interested in showing us how fast they could play. The title track features a lot of electric piano, plus extended guitar work from Caroll Bérard. Just when you think the band stuck in this groove, near the end of the piece, they got more adventurous, with a vocal passage that almost sounds like Gregorian chanting. "Le Cosmophile" is a great fusion piece, nice use of the Moog and electric piano, and sax is also included. This is the only piece with actual singing (in French), but with a band with some of the better French I've heard in prog, it's too bad there's less vocals on Stadaconé than on J'un Oeil.Read more ›
