88KEY USB Wrls Touchpad Keyboard Black with LCD

Based upon having the keyboard less than a day but with lots of use...

Pros
o Operation is reliable (no dropped keystrokes; touchpad & buttons work). Key touch is good, but the layout takes some practice (like most laptops). Key labeling is legible (white on black).
o Range is good. I ran out of testing space at 25+ feet with the receiver mounted on a front USB port.
o Built-in touchpad.
o Has media keys (right side of keyboard) and common activity keys (scroll, browser navigation, email, Windows Explorer on left side of keyboard). The Logitech diNovo Edge is almost twice the cost of the WKB-4200UB and does not have media keys.
o OK size for HTPC. Dimensions (16.5" x 8") are not too large, but permit keys to be a decent size. Note that the specs (11.75" x 6") on the Adesso website (and, consequently, Amazon) are incorrect. If you want something smaller you might consider the Logitech DiNovo Mini but the user reviews scared me away and it's more expensive than the WKB-4200UB.
o No special drivers are necessary. (My testing was done on XP 32-bit.)
o Has foldable rear legs.
o Customer support was easy to reach and the first suggestion solved the problem (touchpad initially did not work).
o Uses AA batteries.

Cons
o The touchpad and the two "mouse" buttons initially did not work (no response from computer and receiver did not blink). Solution: uninstall/reinstall batteries. So far (less than 24 hours, but lots of use) the problem has not recurred.Read more ›

I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase. I use my computer (Laptop) at home mainly from an armchair. It is connected to a wide-screen monitor, to which I have custom attached to a camera tripod. I wanted a keyboard with a touch-pad,so I wouldn't have to hassle with a mouse in limited space. This keyboard entirely suits my needs and although a little pricey, seems to be very well made. I can't foresee any reason to have to replace it for a long time.

Although I am one of the apparently few who love to use a touchpad vs. a mouse, finding this combination in an external keyboard is tough. It is especially tough if you want a full-sized keyboard.

Despite misgivings at settling for a mini keyboard, Adesso is a reputable brand and based on reviews that were posted all over the internet, I had high hopes.

The good news: the unit is attractive and was easy to hook up.

The bad news:
1. the keys are small and tightly packed together, which makes it tough for all but the most skilled typist to avoid making mistakes.
2. the layout of the keyboard is atypical, which makes finding certain keys - most notably the DELETE key - difficult.
3. and most annoying - there is no way to turn off the scrolling feature on the side of the touchpad which because of its location to the right of the keyboard means that if one is not careful, or has fatter fingers, one often engages the scroll feature when it is neither wanted nor desirable. Ultimately, this became such a problem for me that I went back to (successfully)finding a solution to restore full function to my ThinkPad SK-8835 USB keyboard in a Windows 7 operating environment.

No review would be complete, however, without a complete condemnation of Adesso's Customer Service Department. First, it is very difficult to get through to their offices. No one picks up the phone!! Second, when finally I spoke to someone in their Sales Department (which initially was the only department that answered the phone), they advised me to email the President of the company. I did and after 5 weeks, have still had no response. (So much for his supposed high level of interest in hearing fromcustomers!Read more ›

In general, this keyboard reminds me of a clunker from the 1980s that requires the typist to press each key down a long distance before a character appears, so typing really slows down. I would have rated this product 2 or 3 stars, but the space bar, which others have complained about, often didn't function at all, so I rated it 1 star. Countless times I had to go back and fix missing spaces. I eventually realized that if you hit the space bar in the very center with much more than the amount of force usually required, it will usually type of space. However, if you type normally, the space bar will often not do anything. And, if you press the space bar on its left or right side, it won't ever create a space at all. Unfortunately, I ignored the other reviewers who have complained about the space bar because I really wanted a keyboard with the track pad on the far right side for ergonomic reasons. I suggest you don't make the same mistake. It's very hard to believe Amazon sells such a lame excuse for a keyboard, given the large percent of returns they must receive.
