This controller worked great for about 2 days and then the right button on the d-pad broke from normal use because it is poorly constructed. I am positive that this will happen to anyone who buys this, BUT i realized that the controller's case is so similar to the official sega saturn's controller case and the motherboard fits really well when you swap them. I had a broken controller lying around so it went to good use . The only thing you need to do is to swap the motherboards and desolder the shoulder buttons from the g-tron controller and replace them with the original controller's shoulder buttons.Otherwise it will not fit well. Then you just put the gtron controller's motherboard back into the official sega controller's case. It is so simple and the result is so much better than if the gtron controller's case was actually made well. It takes about 20 minutes to do altogether. Its worth buying this controller if you have the patience to do this simple modification. I am very satisfied with the result.

Despite having the design of the popular Sega Saturn controller, the quality of this controller is far below par and anyone who spends a significant amount of time on retro and/or 2D gaming on the PC or PS3 will be better off investing their time and money in acquiring a genuine SLS Sega USB controller.

Several years ago, SLS (Sega Logistics Service) released their official Sega Saturn-style control pads in Japan for the PS2 and for PC/Mac in an assortment of colors. Since they are a perfect replica of the Saturn control pad (the greatest 2D controller of all time), they were wildly popular. At only around $35, the demand by far exceeded the supply. SLS manufactured them again in late 2008 and Chinese sellers flooded eBay with them, but quickly selling out once again.
Unfortunately, SLS has not made any more since, and we are now left with two options; either buy these cheap but crappy knockoffs from Gtron, Retrolink and other crap brands (which all probably come from the same factory). Or pay top dollar in the rare instances that the genuine SLS brand control pads appear on eBay and Yahoo Japan Auctions.

I did both- I shelled out $50.00 for a used SLS Sega USB control pad on eBay. I also ordered a Retrolink brand and GTron.
The difference in quality is night and day:

*Genuine SLS Sega Control Pads (the ones I recommend)*- the d-pad is textured and movement is smooth, precise and solid, producing slight but discernable clicks. The buttons are responsive; not too soft but not too hard to the push. They are perfectly compatible with the PS3, with the X, Y and Z buttons lining up with PS3 square, triangle, and L2, and A B C with X O R2. The shoulder buttons match R1 & L1. They're also perfectly compatible with 2D PS1 games played on the PS3.

I really enjoyed this controller and was having A BLAST playing my Street Fighter games on PS3 with this controller. The only problem is that it is INCREDIBLY cheap and does not last long. The controller will only give you a month worths play and then the D-pad will go out on you. The first time I ordered one, the RIGHT direction of the D-pad stopped working within a month. So I gave the first controller the benefit of the doubt and ordered a second one. Within a week the SAME EXACT PROBLEM happened with the new one I ordered. Seems like the only way I'm going to play using a Saturn controller is to by a converter and use my old Saturn controller.

I was initially put off by the reviews for this controller, as many have said the thing stops working for them after a while. I remembered that sometimes these controllers that hop of the Chinese Factory Assembly line are are rarely as clean as the official controllers. So upon receiving the item, I cleaned the insides of the controller with the usual isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs. The pcb was covered in flux, especially the copper contacts. I also made sure to clean the rubber contact pads.

After some use for a few days, I found the controller to be okay. The biggest problems with this controller is the Dpad, which is of a harder plastic than what I'm used to with regular video game controllers. It's an easy fix by switching the dpad with one from an actual Sega Saturn's.

On how the PS3 treats the button layout, it's probably the PCB's fault, considering this is registered as a 9 button controller. Start buttons are usually designated to #10.

All in all, it's an okay controller, provided that you clean the thing. If you're a serious gamer, you'd already have other ways of using a Saturn pad anyway.

i got this because i was curious on whether or not the sega saturn pad really is good for fighting games and im trying to find a good pad to use when im at work, or when im playing injustice(i play stick normally but NRS games seem to be better on pad for some reason) ive been playing with it for about 8 hours and so far this is what ive gathered:

the microswitches on the L and R buttons are insanely hard to press.

the small dpad was shocking at first coming from playing on a madcatz fightpad and neogeo ps3 controller for so long, but you cant really mess up a floating dpad so it was nice after getting used to it. it has shorter throw than the fightpad which is kind of good when doing charge moves. its not as short as the genesis pad but not as long as the madcatz, right in the middle.

the SS button layout is awesome. i can see why people love the SS so much. obviously it doesnt have the fit and finish of a real SS controller, but ive never used one before and having nothing to compare it to other than tons of other 3rd party pads(im a controller collector) its not too bad.

connecting to the ps3 is possible, but its kind of weird, heres the buttons,
a-square
b-X
c-O
x-triangle
y-L1
z-R1
l-L2
r-R2
start- select

very strange, you sort of need another controller to do things first before you get into a game but at least its not possible to hit the start button in the middle of a fight which has been the bane of pad players in tourneys.

all together, its not bad for its price.
