5.0 out of 5 stars Good improvements on orginal Clip, September 8, 2009
By Ross A. Seymour "rseymour10" (La Crosse, WI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The title says is all: Clip +. It is really the first generation of the Clip plus a few well thought out design and firmware changes.

The volume control is now on the opposite side, the side with the usb plug rather than the headphone. With right-angle headphone plugs, you needed to swing the headphone plug out of the way to use the volume control on the old Clip.

The on/off switch is now on the top instead of the left side (where the volume control now is). I often needed to turn off my Clip while under a shirt and not looking at it. I actually turned it off only about half the time because of slide switch. Now there's simply a button on the top. The hold button, which used to be on the on/off switch, is now activated by holding down the menu button. Since I rarely used the hold button I can't say whether this is an improvement.

The clip on the back is a big design change. The clip, for better or worse, is no longer detachable. Personally, I liked being able to detach it if I was using velcro rather the clip to attach to something, like a bag. That being said the new clip is sleeker. Closer to the back of the body and a bit wider. The clip now has a ridge at the end of the clip as opposed to the circle of the old Clip. It seems to hold on just as well.

The square controls (as opposed to the former round controls) doesn't make much of a difference. If you are using the controls by feeling rather than seeing, the square may make it a bit easier to know where you are at on the controls.

Otherwise it is the same size and all. My old Clip silicone case fits it OK, but I will get a new case when they come out.

Inside there are some firmware changes. Included now is a menu item for Slot Player chips (a soon-to-be obsolete format if I've ever seen one). The menus slide rather than jump, giving it a smoother look (I guess). In the old Clip, when you pressed the center button while a track was playing, it went to a visualization, then a listing of the current track playing. Obviously a redundancy. Now, it show info on the next track to play, instead of the current one. Other changes had already been incorporated in firmware updates for the original Clip.

One new function is the replay gain function. Very useful if you shuffle songs. This allows music to play back at about the same volume without you, the listener, having to actually change the volume. It works by adding a bit of instruction to each music file with information about how loud or soft the track is and then the volume of the player adjusts accordingly. Whether your tracks have replay gain information on them depends on how you got them. Many media players, like Media Monkey, can read the tracks and add this information.

One further note on the replay gain function. It should be set to song if you are on shuffle. Also the pregain is set a bit low. If you find yourself fiddling with the volume, increase the replay gain setting to 6 or 9.

The manual says it has gapless play. I believe you need to rip your tracks as gapless for this to work. Many standard mp3 converters don't do this, but maybe it is more prevalent for AAC (iTunes).

The best for last: a micro card slot. This allows you to add capacity to the player (currently the limit is 16gb with larger cards on the horizon), well above the 4gb that it comes with. If you have gone lossless (I use FLAC) then you know that extra file space is a big plus. With only FLAC files, the 4gb player holds about nine hours of music (probably five times more with normal MP3 files). This is fine by me but if I'm going on a trip then having the expansion capacity will be a big plus.

Sound quality wise, it sounds about the same to me, compared with the old Clip. Which means it sounds great, amped or not. Some have noted a fuller, warmer, louder sound, but my old ears can't pick that out.

Why people don't use these by the droves at the gym is beyond me. I still see very few of these players down at the Y, while I see all manner of big iPods. This little machine is perfect for the gym or any on-the-go activity.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buggy for a 2nd generation product, September 12, 2009
The Clip+ is the ideal size for runners or gym rats. Mine replaces a Creative Zen Stone Plus w/Speaker (now obsolete), and if you are familiar with this player, the Clip+ is exactly the same size and thickness. It fits easily into a pants or gym shorts pocket. I will probably cut the clip off, which will make it even thinner.

However, I think by now, everyone has owned an mp3 player, and there is a set of basic features that we all expect to have. We expect buttons to work in a standard way. The Clip+ is confusing and/or a failure on many counts. I am still trying to understand the Clip+, but almost without exception I am finding that everything I was used to doing is more difficult or simply impossible. I can't believe this is a "version 2" product.

1. The Clip+ has a date/time setting, but the only place to see it is on the menu where you set it. What was the point?

2. The buttons on the front of the Clip+ depress way too easily. If you bump your pocket just so, you'll pause the player or change tracks. This never, ever happened on my old player - the buttons had enough resistance to prevent this. To avoid this on the Clip+, you use the Lock function which locks out all the buttons. That's better than nothing, but not much. The volume and on/off buttons are on the sides of the case and have more resistance to accidental bumping.

3. The Clip+ assumes that you use MP3 tags to organize your files/albums, so their menu system is based on that. The suppliers of the podcasts I listen to, don't seem to care about tags. And that's fine. I simply rename my files to be in the alphabetical order that I want to listen to them. The Clip+ supports this, but it is not the default mode. You have to wander through the menus to find "Folders" mode. And even so, the menu system seems to jump back into "tagged podcast" mode all the time.

4. The Clip+ lacks a "play one track and stop" mode, which was very handy on my old player when playing podcasts. The player would stop, I'd delete the track and start the next one. This mode doesn't exist on the Clip+. I used to take my old player to bed at night and "play one and stop" was useful there as well. The Clip+ has a sleep mode which is a fair alternative, but it takes about 10 button clicks to get to it.

5. There seems to be a bug where if you delete a file while it's playing, near the end of the file... the Clip+ deletes the NEXT file. You are asked to confirm that you're deleting a file... but you're not told which file is on the chopping block. Nice going there.

6. The display is 3 lines. Most of their menus are 4 lines long. Again, poor design.

7. The Clip+ has a bookmark feature for podcast and audiobook files. If you have played part of a track, a record is kept of your last position in the track. If you leave the track and return later, you return to the bookmarked spot. Sounds like a good idea... but it's buggy. Suppose you're in a track and want to start over. You can't. The "back" button takes you to the start of the _previous_ track. (Hopefully that's a bug they can fix.) From there, the "ahead" button will return you to your (bookmarked) position where you were before. All you can do is manually scan back to the beginning. Sometimes you are given a choice to "Resume" or "Restart" a track... but never when I really want it. If I have to think this much about a "feature" and still can't figure it out, it's the mark of poor design. Stuff like this should just work without having to think about it.

8. In general, the Clip+ requires far too much use of the menu system. On my old player, I could do everything I needed to do with 2 or 3 button presses at the most. I could do a lot of stuff on the treadmill without breaking stride, and without even looking. Not so with the Clip. You really have to be looking at the menus to do anything.

9. The card slot really ought to have a rubber cap or plug. It's just wide open to dirt, lint, moisture, etc. You can see the circuit board through the slot. That can't be a good thing.

Well, I hope this helps anyone considering the Clip+.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best small portable music player for sports & exercising, October 1, 2009
By Leetsauce (San Jose, California) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was in the market for a new mp3 player for running and working out. I had outgrown the 1gb that my 2nd gen iPod shuffle has, and was tired of it having syncing issues with the newest version of iTunes. I considered the new iPod shuffle but after reading pages and pages of negative reviews regarding the proprietary headphones and not water resistant control system I decided to look elsewhere.

This Sandisk Sansa Clip Plus has completely fulfuilled my needs, and in a lot of ways made my life easier. With the iPod shuffle I only had the option to eraser and sync/autofill from my iTunes library, which is not always convenient or practical. With this Sansa I can just drag and drop my mp3 files into the 'music' folder on the device when it mounts. I always have wished that iPods had a simple option like this so people are not forced to use iTunes. The iPod shuffle could never tell me when it needed a charge also because it has no LCD display, so I always ended up charing it "just in case." The Clip Plus has a battery meeter so I can avoid having to do this in the future.

The device is very small and portable it's perfect for going for runs. The controls are easy to use while in stride and having it clipped on my side. The Clip Plus is small and does not rub against me in any way. I have no complaints about the buttons or menu system as other users have mentioned. They seem really straight forward to me. Menu options are great and useful (shuffle, replaygain, repeat, etc)/

I am plensently surprised by the quality of this product for the price! I also like the idea of being able to expand the memory on this unit if I run out of space.

I will keep my 160GB iPod Classic for having a large amount of music in my car, but this product definitely satisfies the portable market better than what Apple and Microsoft are currently offering. Great product overall.
