Great views of whaling taken before the final voyage in wood ships out of New Bedford. Pretty much historically accurate. Decent script with rescue of the "fair maiden" only minutes before the end of the film. Excellent film restoration and a contemporary music score which set the mood for this silent film. A bit overacted but not out of line when the film was made.

The story has some of the melodrama (and prejudices) of the era, but the whaling scenes are astounding. Clara Bow is also good in her role, which breaks some of the stereotypes for young actresses of the era. Clara really brings an energy to her scenes. The whaling scenes are so real that I wonder if they actually killed whales when filming the scenes. Though the story is melodramatic by today's standards, the story is enjoyable.

This movie is not for anyone who gets sea sick easy but if you love being out on the sea in pursuit of the BIG one this movie is a must sea (sic). Dean Stockwell as a child star, Lionel Barrymore and Richard Widmark performances are award winning. Don't miss it!
