I purchased this lettuce knife to try to avoid the browned lettuce issue. Of course when I need lettuce for a sandwich I just tear a piece off but sometimes my recipes require shredded lettuce and using a regular knife to skim the lettuce creates the browning. This knife doesn't really solve that problem because it is very difficult to cut with. it's plastic so it's not really sharp at all. I actually have found better use for it as a knife to cut through soft desserts and pies with so at least it's not a waste of money! I just wouldn't recommend it if you want to do some lettuce slicing unless you want some sad looking lettuce.

The package said this was a cake cutter -- not a lettuce cutter. Are they the same? Since it looked about like the picture of the lettuce cutter on Amazon, I tried it on lettuce. It worked okay on lettuce. Price was right -- so I kept it. But I still wonder if what I got was really a lettuce cutter.

I just received this knife today and had to have my 9 year old try it out. It worked out great. We used it on a pear and some strawberries. Worked wonderfully. Makes me more comfortable having my child use this knife instead of using a real knife. We will definitely keep using this as we work in the kitchen together.

Like some of the other reviewers, I bought this plastic knife to cut brownies. (A metal knife blade will often tear through fresh brownies, leaving jagged edges; a plastic knife will cut through smoothly and leave the edges of the brownies clean. It works!) The Zyliss knife works great on brownies and on lettuce. I honestly don't know if lettuce will brown slower or not with the plastic blade--I've never tested it--but it cuts very well, and I enjoy using it. This Zyliss lettuce knife feels MUCH sturdier than the cheaper brand I had bought at a supermarket (that one snapped in half while trying to cut through celery). I don't mind paying a little more for better quality. The red color is also very attractive.

I think I will like this knife for cutting lettuce. It seems to work well and is better than using a steel knife. But, how is it different from the dessert knife. Both are red and look the same.
