Fuel Tank Repair kit 90180 was used on a metal gas tank with a pea size rust hole located half way up the side of tank behind one of the support straps. Not an easy location to work on especially when you have about 3 minutes to apply the product before hardening. The emery cloth/sand paper included in kit is nowhere sufficient for preparation needed. The kit has a small piece of plugging material that will not be used unless an active dripping leak is in progress.
First make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy. Next remove gas cap and push in metal tab with screw driver etc. so it remains open if applicable. I am not going to get into science here, but a tank with some fuel still in it is inherently safer than a completely empty tank. Make sure your repair area is well lighted so you're not fumbling around due to the speed that the epoxy hardens, especially in warm weather. Latex hospital type gloves are also helpful.
A cordless drill with a wire brush was used to remove the rust, undercoating and road grime in and around the hole approximately 3 to 4 inches. The wire brush did create a few sparks! Next the emery cloth was used to sand area followed by Brake Cleaner and a rag. Final step was a stiff wire brush to roughen metal where patch was to be applied.
Have scissors ready to cut packet open after mixing epoxy by squeezing packet. It says on the instructions to mix in 30 seconds, but in reality it takes at least a minute of kneading packet to mix it properly. The mixed epoxy has a consistency of thick honey and will drip off the applicator brush if held steady. Also, the fiberglass reinforcement patch tends to wander off hole and bunches up while trying to apply epoxy. Anything can be used to hold it in place such as a toothpick or tweezers while applying epoxy.

I used this to repair a 2003 TTR-125 L dirtbike fuel tank.

The tank is plastic and has a significant crak about 7 inches in length and 1/8" wide at the middle, and a little less towards the ends. The crack was towards the top of the tank and ran along the upper side of the tank fairings, parallel to the ground. This is a common crack on these dirtbike fuel tanks.

A new tank is $225 and a used one around $130. As the bike is just a beater, those costs were much too high. The previous owner attempted to repair the tank with some sort of epoxy, but it failed miserably and leaked fuel all over.

I used this product and followed the directions completely with additional precautions taken to ensure success. I drained the tank, aired it out overnight, knocked off the old epoxy, sanded the crack with one inch on all sides, cleaned the area with CRC Brake Cleaner, warmed the tank inside the house and applied the epoxy mix.

Note that at first, the epoxy went on with some viscosity and stayed where I put in. In about 30-45 seconds it became quite warm, almost hot, and was much more water-like in viscosity. I had to tilt the tank to keep it from running off. Prepare accordingly.

Now, for the result. The tank is sealed! The bike was taken for multiple rides with new and experienced riders, some of whom lightly crashed, but the epoxy is still holding strong. I am very satisfied. The package includes a fiberglass cloth that goes over the first coat and then you apply a second coat on top. I think this really helps to keep everything together versus just plain epoxy.

Time will tell on the longevity, but so far it is working very well. Even if I have to reapply every few years, it's worth the effort to save $200+.

I bought this product due to an active gas leak on a 1995 Toyota Corolla. The leak was at the bottom of the tank in a crease. I followed the directions and removed the gas cap to reduce the pressure. I had a garden hose available and had the car on jack stands. I then used the eraser in the kit to stop the active leak (which worked very well)then using a plastic putty knife I removed the rubberized undercoating. The leaking gas soften up the coating so this was easy to remove. I next used the emery cloth provided in the kit to scuff up the metal surface. I removed enough coating to lay on a half of the fiberglass cloth provided in the kit. Then I mixed up the epoxy squishing the packet together. I used the brush also provided in the kit to brush the epoxy on the crack and on the metal surface adding the cloth and top coating the fiberglass sheet. Very messy use latex gloves and eye protection. I press the edges with my finger to smooth the edges and let it set for 40 minutes. (the instructions say a minimum of 20 minutes. I added gas and tighten the cap and drove for about a mile and did a check of the patch. Then drove for 10 miles and check the patch. Looks great!

My dad in 1983, bought a GMC Vandura that he gave to me in 1993. The van (having a 6.2 liter diesel engine) refuses to die and now that my father is gone, I'm too sentimental (and too stupid) to let go of this van and I drive it on errands when I need to haul something bulky.

Several months ago, I discovered my tanks leaking. I felt like the captain of the Exxon Valdez when I saw this large pool of diesel in my barn. It was leaking so bad, it reminded me of when my burro takes a leak. I was worried that I'd have to start calling wrecking yards to find a tank for a GMC van having been on diesel (these are rare).

I ordered this on Amazon and when it arrived I took my van to our local shop and gave him the repair kit. They removed the fuel tank in order to properly clean the exterior surface (and to see if there might be additional problem areas) and they scuffed the surface where the only leak was found. The repair did the trick and is working like a charm and I suspect my dad is up there looking down on me and saying "good job son, that van will run another 10 years longer...)
