Great for very short-term, but "become permanent with time"

Since so many other reviewers have so well covered the advantages of this product, I will skip to some problems I encountered.

I had no problems with the tabs I applied and removed within a couple of days. However, for a hardcover book I was reading, I left one of the tabs in for 11 days. When I removed it, it lifted both a noticeable amount of ink and fiber from the page. A response from Avery Customer Support to my query said "the labels will become permanent with time." This is much shorter than I would have expected and limits where I would use them. They are still plenty useful to have a small cache, but won't displace Post-It Notes as much as I initially anticipated. This aspect of the product needs to be highlighted in its description (one star deduction for the limitation, one star deduction for failure to document). Note that their published warning about potential problems is for _types_ of documents, not _duration_.

[Clarification to above paragraph (in response to comments), 2009-10-27]: The issue I was trying to raise was with _predictability_. One would like to be able to know _before_ applying a NoteTab to a paper type what were the risks of it having a problem. Anecdotal evidence--mine and others, problem/no problem--is not a substitute for what should have been in the product description from the R&D testing. Furthermore, the advice to the customer to "always test before applying" produced the wrong prediction in the case I cited (the short-term success indicated that I wouldn't have a longer-term problem).Read more ›

Tab It: An Avery NoteTabs Review

As a student, I selected the Avery NoteTabs in hopes they would help organize my reading and studies. I currently use Post-it one inch wide flags to indicate important pages in my textbook. This system works for me; however the flags are too flimsy for page turning.

The Avery NoteTabs I selected are shaped like the tabs found on file folders. The three inch length is about three quarters the length of a file folder tab. Using the NoteTabs, I can easily turn to specifically marked pages. If the NoteTab is positioned incorrectly, it easily lifts and re-sticks to a new location without lifting ink or leaving a sticky residue. As a page marker, the NoteTabs is an excellent tool.

Avery claims these NoteTabs will work "with most writing instruments," but includes a disclaimer stating "Results may vary depending on ... type of ink." I tested the NoteTabs using a pencil, gel rolling ball pen, ball point pens of various colors, and a highlighter. The paper coated tab accepts writing better than the clear sticky section. However the clear sticky section area smudges and transfers small spots of ink unless left to dry a short while. The pencil smeared on the paper tab section as well. Additionally the pale pastel tab colors provided plenty of contrast with the ink.

As a simple page marker, the Avery NoteTabs work great. Writing on the see-through area is not as good as Avery claims. However with the right pen and a little drying time, they should work.

PROS:
Thicker more effective tabs
Easy to remove and reposition
Doesn't lift ink, leave residue

CONS:
Written text smears and bleeds

A Great Value

My wife served as product tester for this review. While using these NoteTabs at the office, several of her co-workers inquired, "Wow, what are those? Where can I get some?"

That really says it all, but for those who crave details... yes, they work. Well.

With Avery NoteTabs, you really can turn any page into a divider, making it a snap to organize bound and preprinted materials. Some inks can smear (so test the pen first) and, while re-positionable, they can not be moved and reused forever, but these slight drawbacks are no reason to hold back my fifth star.

Finding a product that keeps every promise made on its packaging is a rare treat these days. Thank you, Avery.

Sturdier alternative to post-it flags

These Note Tabs are similar to Post It flags, but they are larger and designed to resemble a divider tab. There is ample space for writing on the colored area, and additional notes could be added on the semi-clear part that contains the adhesive. The tabs are easy to remove and reposition. They have a sturdier feel than standard flags, and could be used to turn pages.

The only negative is the packaging the tabs come in. The plastic wrapping is somewhat flimsy, and the adhesive to close the packaging is not very strong - it would have been nice to have a more durable storage option (perhaps a thicker plastic envelope with a ziploc-type closure.)

Features

These Avery NoteTabs will adhere very securely onto all surfaces - both porous and non porous. They will most definitely stand up to the rigors of repeated tugging and flipping as you heedlessly thumb through the pages of your oft-used book or binder.

- See-Through Adhesion
The adhesive part of the tab is see-through, so it won't obscure any text on the page.

- Writable Surface
You can write on them using a ball-point pen, felt-tip pen, or pencil.

- Durable

They Work Fine, But Not Sure They Are a Big Advance

These tabs work fine - certainly easy to use, but I'm not sure they are a big improvement over "old" style tabs. If you are looking to try something new, I'd recommend them.
