I am somewhat of a vinyl freak, and I bought this cartridge to play old, questionable records from the thrift store. Was I ever surprised by the sound quality it produced! I was so surprised I decided to A-B compare it with my Denon DL-110 that is currently my workhorse cartridge. I recorded seven cuts from records played with the Denon onto a CD-RW, then directly compared them to the same cuts played with the AT CN5625AL. The AT produced about 95% of the quality sound of the Denon; it doesn't have the extended, airy high end of the Denon, but the rest of the frequency spectrum was very similar. The cuts I chose for the test represent different conditions that can be hard to reproduce - worn records, 1950's mono and 1960's stereo, excellent 1980's jazz, "hot" cut records, and inner groove cuts. No, the little AT won't track as well as the Denon on sibilant passages, and its resistance to inner groove distortion is not the same, but we're talking about in comparison with a cartridge that cost almost 10 times as much! And unlike most AT cartridges I have tried, this one is not unusually bright in the upper end; it's quite well balanced, in fact. I'm giving this cartridge five stars; in the absolute it probably only rates four (very good), but because of the incredibly low cost, I'm giving it five. This little cartridge is a sleeper, a real giant-killer if installed and aligned carefully (I aligned mine with a MFSL Geo-Disc).

I have a turntable renovation business and did a lot of research into various cartridges, both new and vintage, before settling on this one as my basic "go to" model. I'm particularly picky when it comes to the sound I get from a turntable and I was pretty skeptical about this cartridge, given the price point.

I did a bunch of listening up against the AT-95E, Grado Black, AT-120E and some popular vintage cartridges from Shure and AT. The results were very interesting. Don't get me wrong, this is a basic cartridge and it can sound a little 2-dimensional and harsh at times. It's not super-detailed and engaging, but it does produce a very enjoyable dynamic well-balanced sound and it tracks pretty reliably. Given its relative high compliance, it'll suit a lot of tone arms. I prefer it to the AT-95, which is more expensive, a lower compliance cartridge and yet is very well reviewed - that one just sounded boring.

If you want to get quality and detail from your records, you're better off spending more money, for sure. The AT-120E gives superb detail and is a class act, but also presents vinyl with a CD-like precision that I find a little off-putting. My favorite vintage budget cartridge is the AT-13ea, if you can find one, which is SO musical and has just the right amount of "character" and dynamics. The Grado Black for me sounds a little too "dark" and un-involving. Of course, your mileage may vary: Setup is crucial and some tonearms will prefer certain cartridges.

For the price though, you won't find anything better.

Got an old-school turntable from my 80s college days, and needed a new cartridge. Thanks goodness for today's DJs, there are still a lot of cart choices on the market.

Read a lot of reviews and settled on this one for sound quality and price. Was very pleasantly surprised! Some of my friends remarked that they didn't remember that vinyl records could sound so good.

At this price, this is no audiophile product. But i'm still surprised at the excellent sound.

One bit of advice to prevent some frustration if you haven't purchased an audio cartridge in a while - Google "audio cartridge mounts" and find out if you need a standard mount, p-mount, or special cartridge mount for your particular turntable. Not rocket science, but necessary info.

I recently purchased my 3rd CN5625AL. I have quite a bit of experience with this cartridge, as well as other budget carts (which I'll get to in a bit). I give the CN5625AL 5 stars for the following reasons.

Versatile: It sounds and tracks great in low mass straight tonearms and medium mass S-shaped tonearms. This is convenient for vinyl newbies needing a cartridge, but are confused by cartridge/tonearm matching. It's not picky like its big brother the AT95E (I would NOT recommend for low mass arms). Unlike heavier carts (Shure M97xE, Ortofon 2M Red) it isn't difficult to balance with certain tonearms.

Ease of set up: Aligning this cartridge is made easier by the fact that the stylus assembly and cartridge body are rectangular. I've found set up to be quick and painless with the CN5625AL compared to other carts. Other carts I've spent countless hours tweaking trying to get them to sound right. The CN5625AL is much more "set and forget". I recommend 2 grams tracking force and equal antiskating, though your results may vary.

Sound: it certainly sounds a LOT better than what you would expect a $20 cart to sound like. Having a conical stylus, it doesn't have the same definition in the highs and lows that elliptical styli do. It sounds warm and inviting. I would rate the sound overall as better than the Ortofon Omega and Shure M97xE (excluding any "upgrade" styli), and just under the Audio Technica AT95E. I prefer the warm midrange of the CN5625AL, but the AT95E has greater dynamics and high end clarity. If you find the AT95E to be overly bright (which I don't), you will prefer the CN5625AL.

Tracking: this cartridge, like every Audio Technica cart I've used, tracks very well.
