This is another one of those albums I put on reel to reel tape but shelved for 30 years. It was a nice surprise to find this one. Since it is from the album, it doesn't have the extra track, Cosmic Kid on it.

The music and songs are not bad at all. At times, they remind me of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. The playing is also competent. A few of the melodies still ring in my head, partially because when I transferred this to my computer, I had to re-record it four times before I got a good version.

That being said, this is very mild and mellow, a hint of country rock, but a hint of CSNY also, in that vein. However, after listening to it several times, I have a urge to put in something loud and obnoxious like Bathory or Cannibal Corpse, just to pick me up again.

Don't let my musical prejudices sway you from seeking this out. I originally rated this as three stars, but then again, that's my musical taste, rather than their playing and style, so I bumped it up to four as this could be considered a lost gem. If you are into mellow music, this should fit the bill, and I highly recommend Unicorn for those of you so inclined. If you are looking for something heavy or maybe psychedelic, as the band name and album cover (sort of) suggest, then look elsewhere.

Just got this recently and so far it's up to snuff with Unicorns future song skills that get better with each listen for sure. If you like country rock with lots of guitars and harmonies done well you would like this...it's a tad different than the later Unicorn stuff but very skillfully done .

Don't Ever Give Up Trying and (bonus cut) Cosmic Kid are standout cuts on a nice album. But if you don't are about the former cut (Don't Ever...), the 2-CD Best of set may cover the band's music sufficiently....

CSN/CSNY are obvious influences which is fine by me. Some wonderful songs mixed in with merely good ones. I can't rate this as highly as other similar UK bands such as Help Yourself or early Brinsley Schwarz. Unicorn lack a certain spunk, and are a bit humorless by comparison. But Unicorn are tasteful, adept, and hit the sweet spot on occasion.
