I bought a PetSafe water system for my two cats but didn't buy the filters for it. Frankly, I thought the idea of filtered water for indoor house pets was overkill; however, my water system's 2010 quality report changed my mind.

After researching online for the best price, I bought one two-pack box of these filters from Amazon on trial. I saved a lot of money by doing so; they also arrived quickly. To my delight, the cats began drinking more water right away. Good hydration is essential for all cats, and especially for the males' narrow urethra.

I now keep several PetSafe filters in reserve; I change it every other month. Trust me, this is much cheaper than the vet bills to treat a beloved pet's damaged kidneys, bladder or urethra.

One caveat: New filters are messy to handle due to excess charcoal. This is why I gave this product four stars. How I deal with it: Immerse the filter in a glass of water for a few minutes, then wipe off the dark charcoal streaks before inserting it into the PetSafe device. I also wash out and wipe down the device during the first 2-3 refills to remove a very light charcoal film; after that, no problem.

The identical filter pack cost $6.04 at Pet Mountain so it's a lot cheaper there. And since the filters are nothing more than activated carbon you can open up the plastic filter case and replenish the used activated carbon with new AC you can buy at any pet store. It's sold in bulk at a very cheap price.

These activated carbon filters will certainly remove a lot of impurities from your water so the concept of having a filter to clean your pet's water is a great idea. I've always filled my pet's water supplies with water filtered through an end of a kitchen faucet filter so maybe that's all the filtering pets really need. But these activated carbon filters will give you the added assurance that your furry family will be drinking ultra clean and good tasting water. Just like humans, animals deserve the very best too.

It's always a good idea to periodically clean your pet's water container and after cleaning thoroughly rinse the container with a lot of fresh water. A good tip during cleaning is to add a tablespoon of bleach to your cleaning water to kill any bacteria in the container. Just make sure you rinse away all traces of the bleach after cleaning. Instead of buying expensive cleaning tools designed specifically for pets you could instead use old toothbrushes or foam cleaning brushes from your local dollar stores. They are much cheaper and do the job just as well or better.

One last note: If you are a do-it-yourself type person you can not only save a lot of money by refilling these water filters with cheap activated carbon, you also decrease the amount of (almost) indestructible plastic in landfills. You can recycle the original plastic filter cases over and over again. So with just a minimum of effort and ingenuity you can help to keep our planet cleaner and save money while doing it. A win-win situation. All the best...

Using the PetSafe water filters with the PetSafe Healthy Pet Water Station Dog and Cat Water System with Stainless Steel Bowl is optional, the water system can be used without or without the filters. I chose to use the filters since we have well water. The filters come in a pack of two, but be very careful removing them from the packaging. The black carbon dust is everywhere from being bounced around during shipment. I am not able to get the filter looking squeaky clean, but once you run it under water as directed a majority of the carbon dust does away. The filtered water has no odor and looks very clean with no hard water deposits. I only wished they lasted a little longer since it states you should replace the filter every 6 to 8 weeks.

I have had the Water Feeders for sometime, and I noticed that my Ace he is a Austrian Sheppard would take a few licks of water and walk away and he was doing that often. When I would fill his outside bowl from my well, he would empty the bowl. Since my water is city in the house, and I never really liked the taste, it seemed that Ace didn't like it. So I purchased three sets of the filters, and within a few days I would see Ace drinking to his hearts content and now he doesn't like the well water that much. So if there is any indications by my Ace to drink more since the filters were installed, that means this product is a winner. Be good to your pets, and the rewards are endless.

These are the filters for the PetSafe water systems, and they work great. I live in a hard water area and not only do these make the water more appealing for my cats, they also help stop the build up of lime scale on the aluminum drinking bowl.

The only down side it when you first unpack them they are covered in a film of the carbon granules, which needs to be wiped off. Also, before using them I thoroughly rinse them under running water to make sure all the loose granules have come out.

I can't recommend these filters. I've read a lot of reviews on the waterer where the water stops flowing. I believe many of those complaints are a result of the filter. It creates too much restriction on the water. I used one filter then tried using the waterer without the filter. It hasn't clogged since. I use filtered water to fill the dispenser. I do recommend washing out the waterer weekly (drooling dog owners more frequently...the dogs...not the owners) and washing around the valve good.
