Being familiar with Sunex Tools, I opted to start with a name brand as opposed to the cheaper spark plug cleaners sold at the flea markets and China shops.
The quality of craftsmanship is evident. Set up was a breeze. The first thing I did was install a 1/4" male coupler to attach my quick-connect air hose. Do use teflon thread tape.
For the initial test, I held the cleaner in my hands so I could press the air button with my right thumb while rotating the plug with my left hand. I set the unit on B for blast. Even with 110 PSI, there was no kick back. It was a very smooth operation. Very fine dust does blow out from the unit so I'd suggest wearing a dust mask. The brief instructions do not specify the amount of time needed for cleaning. I started with one minute and followed with one minute on the A (AIR ) setting. The carbon was gone but the plug was coated with a fine gray dust from the abrasive media. I removed the plug and blew it out thoroughly with a fine-pointed air nozzle at 110 PSI to remove any remaining grit from the plug well.
I took the cleaned, NGK DR8ES-L motorcycle plugs to the workshop for a closer inspection under a powerful, magnifying shop light. This is where is I was disappointed. After polishing the plugs on a brass wire wheel, something still didn't look right.
Abrasive silica media had wedged and stuck into the tapered well surrounding the center electrode. I began digging it out with a Xacto Knife. Please look at my uploaded images and note the amount of abrasive media collected from each plug. This destructive grit would do serious damage inside the cylinder wall of an engine.
I've always hated removing the gummy carbon and grease that collects on plugs, especially those on two-stroke engines.Read more ›
