This is a fantastic pen. It's nicely weighted and balanced, but not heavy. The rubber grip is soft but supportive and the brushed metal looks great. It's not terribly expensive.

The best thing about this pen however, is the ink and ball. If you're a lefty like me, you like gel ink pens and hate ballpoints, but struggle because you smudge the wet ink with your hand, this pen is perfect for you. It has the feel of a gel ink pen but doesn't smudge!

For if they did, there would be a shortage of in the U.S. Yes, this pen is that good.

In my older age, I've come to believe there are two types of folks that use writing instruments (that is, for the few of us still writing and not keyboarding)...those that think cheap, disposable pens are the solution. And, a smaller clique that believes a good pen is a thing of beauty, something that enhances your writing experience. I'm obviously of the latter group. Typically, I write with fountain pens, F and EF nib, blue ink and have done so for decades. There is something in the fountain pen's characteristics that only a nib (not a ball) can provide. That said, there are situations that do not lend themselves to my favorite writing instrument...notably air travel and rough outdoors use.

Normally, I use a Lamy Swift with an M66 rollerball refill. Very, very robust, typically German over-engineered and a pleasure to write with. But, the refills are gobsmack expensive (~$ 6-7 USD EACH) and last almost a depressingly short amount of time (typically a month at best). So, I had to find a good alternative for it and I compared almost every ball point, gel and rollerball pen made. None really made the cut, consistent with the Lamy's superlative ink flow and consistency...until the Jetstream by Uni came into my life.

It's NOT a gel, or a roller or a ball point...it's a hybrid. Uni lists the Jetstream as its own category on their website and it bridges the best of both all of them...the ease of a roller, the vibrant ink of a gel and the utility of a ball point. And, for reasons unknown, this pen as presented here (Alpha) isn't sold in this country, only plastic-bodied, inexpensively produced 'mass market' Jetstreams.

Uniball's Jetstream line is the smoothest ball point style pen available. If you need a pen that can apply enough pressure to write through those multi-layer reproduction forms (like a check), and want the smooth action of a gel pen but can't have the ink bleeding through thin sheets, this is the pen to get.

The name of the product has "gel" in the name; I am uncertain of the exact details of pen type classifications, but the Jetstream ink has the action of a gel pen without the smudging or bleed through I have encountered with other gel pens. Uniball's own web site classifies their pens as Roller, Gel, and Jetstream as its own classification. They also claim it "dries 9 times faster than a standard ballpoint."

Jetstreams come in multiple line widths and body styles. This one has a fat rubbery section, which is good if you like fat pens.

The Wirecutter, a review site which I find is pretty credible, has an exhaustive review of cheap ball points, and they settled on the Jetstream line as the Best Pen.

I am giving this 2 stars because the pen was comfortable to hold.I saw many great reviews here on amazon and other pen review sites and decided to try it out myself and was greatly disappointed. The ink flow was inconsistent with any amount of pressure and angle - ink built up on the tip causing gushes periodically at start of a new line or word. It was unusable.

I bought this pen along with a Uni-Signo DX 0.38 - tested the same exact way - and there were no issues at all, it wasn't as comfortable as the Jetstream but the Signo DX was smooth and consistent (no smear or bleeding).

I posted an image of what I am trying to explain.

This pen, a specialty Japanese import, has continued to impress me since purchase, and has quickly become by daily carry pen. The Uniball Jetstream ink writes smoothly and dries fast, which is perfect for left-handed writers. The point is 0.7mm, which in practical use results in a fine black line. The pen just glides quite smoothly over the page, and the gel grip is soft and responsive, much better than gel grips on other pens I've used of late.

The Uni-Ball Jetstream is one of the new hybrid roller pens, falling somewhere between a gel pen and a ballpoint. It gives a clearer darker line than a ballpoint. It writes as smoothly and easily as a gel pen. It doesn't provide as "wet," thick, and dark a line as a gel pen but the flip side of this is that it will write far longer than a gel pen will before using up its ink.

In the USA you can buy Jetstream stick pens or plastic, refillable retractable pens in office supply stores; I have even found them in a supermarket. They come in the usual plastic and cardboard blister packs, several to a pack. Their price is similar to ordinary ballpoints or gel pens. They will write as smoothly and as well as this more expensive version, because they have the same "guts." If you just want a good writing pen for cheap, you might try them.

For me, the disposables are so lightweight and write so smoothly and with so little pressure that I actually have trouble controlling them. This pen is much more solid. Its weight makes it easier for me to control and helps me write better. The soft gummy grip is excellent for writing a long time without fatigue. (Some complain that dust sticks to it, which it does, but this lessens as it ages.) If that appeals to you, or if you just want something a little nicer than the rather cheesy throw-away plastic Jetstreams, you'd like this version.
