It is a fine thing that Franklin has put this dictionary on the market. I had been waiting for years for such a device and must have been one of the first buyers. I have been using a Seiko Japanese/English dictionary that includes an Oxford Dictionary of English (I think) - not as good as the Unabridged - for years. It cost, some years ago, $500 and its construction is much better than the NID-260. The NID has a slow processor, somewhat odd interface, and a cheap feeling keyboard. You could spend $12 dollars on a desktop calculator and get a nicer keyboard, but the keyboard is serviceable. It needs a proper scissors keyboard and a faster processor and then it would deserve five stars. As it is, it's a great reference device and a good value. You just can't beat the Unabridged for its size and in this product they seem to have worked hard to update the entries.

This product has a slim and sleek look , combined with a comfortable and efficient interface . Although complex this opens for use a wide variety of functions : english usage , punctuation , SAT word lists , a good thesaurus , and wonder of wonders considering its size a complete Webster's unabridged dictionary . This last includes a phonetic spell correction function which is practically invaluable when you know how a word sounds but not how to spell it . Kudos Franklin .

I purchased this electronic dictionary several months ago for accurate general use because it had a large data base and the good reputation of the Franklin Company. I'm an educated man (Masters in Business Law) and use it quite often, or I did, until I found another one that's much better and more suited to my needs. This dictionary is too slow for quick and legible word finding. The keys are too small, so if you have medium to large hands as I do, you'll have trouble striking the key you want to hit without striking the key next to it. With this unit, at least, you have to stay on the key with a bit of pressure to get your letter/number to come up. The power button starts the unit okay, but it takes awhile to show the menu on the screen. In cooler temperatures, it's agonizingly slow. The menu is rather confusing, but after a few times using it, you get used to the characteristics of a not-so-useful product. The screen has a huge flaw. It mars rather easily, meaning that any touch with a pressure of more than a pencil eraser will create a permanent line that will be there forever. It's like the old Etch-a-sketch toy you had as a child, without the ability to shake and erase it. This product is more complicated than it needs to be for all it's features. Also, the cost, upwards of $300. is far too high for it's overall convenience and abilities. I'm a fair person and want to give this unit it's due for all the good features it has, but if you're looking for something accurate, easy and has a lot of data packed inside, without the extremely high cost of this unit, keep looking. All in all, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't recommend this product. So, I give it a 2-1/2 star rating. There are better products out there for a better price. Amazon is about as low on price as you'll fine anywhere, but even with free shipping, it's not anywhere worth the cost.

The Franklin electronic dictionary/thesaurus is very compact, clear, and easy to use. I've been using my Sharp for the same purpose and find the Sharp superior for my uses. I am writing my memoirs and need to look up words fast and nothing beats Sharp for speed. For example, if you want to go from thesaurus to dictionary using the Franklin, you have to first go to the library function and then click on dictionary; with the Sharp, there's no need to do this. You just push the dictionary key and you're there. You can transfer from one to the other instantly.

What I've ended up doing is using the Franklin as an addendum for the Sharp so I have access to a larger choice of words. Also, you can have more fun with the Franklin because there are more functions to play with. I'm just not into playing with electronic gadgets.

Either the Sharp or the Franklin would be extremely useful for students, writers, or just people who love words. Either one of them beats a clunky paper book by a whole lot. I've given the Sharp as gifts to my grandson and my son.

One more thing, there's a huge price difference between the two instruments. The Sharp costs under $100; the Franklin is over $250.

Enjoy!

This is the unabridged version of the Websters Third New International Dictionary. It is compact and can stay at your table all the time. It beats having to run to your bookself whenever you need to refer to the dictionary. It is not a talking dictionary. So, if you are looking for a talking dictionary look elsewhere.

Good size screen. Sits like a mini lap top. Start to type words and a list of words comes up saving you time in some cases of typing the whole word.
This dictionary does not make a good crossword dictionary. Compared to my old Franklin Collegiate dictionary it doesn't know near as much alot like me.

This dictionary is simply brilliant and comprehensive. The screen is reader-friendly and right-sized. The only drawback is that there is no pronunciation and hopefully Franklin can incorporate the pronunciation function into the next version of this awesome electronic dictionary.
