The gate swings open in either direction for eay pass thru, but also includes a swing control to prevent the gate from swinging over stairs when placed at the top of stairs. The top of stair plus wood gate is 32" tall and expands from 30" to 48" wide.

This is a taller (32") version of their shorter gate. I have used and like both sizes. Each is good for specific applications. I have purchased 3 of the taller plus gates and one of the standard 28" gates and swear by them. They look a little on the cheap side, but they are sturdy and very functional. I used them at the top and bottom of the stairs. They are VERY easy to install. I purchased direct from Amazon, despite the 3-5 week availability. I recently ordered two for my folks house and they both arrived in less than a week!
