I've seen a few reviews that state this stocking is not for beginners. I can see where some may feel that way but this was the first felt stocking kit that I tackled and it turned out very well. In fact, I entered it in the County fair last year and won first prize!! It is a very time consuming project but so worth it. I found I couldn't put it down at times. I think the key is to read the directions very well and follow them as best you can. I'm not a less is more kind of girl so I ran out of floss on many of the colors because I NEVER used just one strand as I did not like the look of it. Bucilla is great and gives you the code number for each color of floss in the instructions. If you are like me and over use the floss you can just take that number to your local craft store and buy a skein of floss.
I was lucky and had a stocking "mentor" who showed me the tricks of the trade, like lining the stocking and securing your stitches with Fray Check. She gave me the tip to line the stitched side of the stocking with fabric (she uses cotton) by sewing it to the stitched (not decorative) side of the stocking, but only at the top. I went out and purchased a very heavy felt in white and red (I planned on making more kits) and used the red to line the stocking. I sewed it to the top of the side of my stocking that showed all of my stitches (what would be the inside of the stocking)only. Then I pinned the back part of the stocking (what comes with the kit to complete the stocking) to the decorated portion of the stocking as the instructions advise with my heavy red felt sandwiched in between. I then followed the directions closing the stocking so that it may actually be used.Read more ›

Rating design, this stocking is a 4.5. It is darling and full of detail that really comes to life as you sew the stocking, however I was surprised by how small the toe is compared to other stockings I have made. This was my 4th stocking I have made, and the 6th stocking in my family immediate family, yet the toe is a scarce three inches deep compared with the 5 inch deep toes of the older stockings. I thought by initially looking at the picture that the smoke stack was sewn to part of the toe and the wheels were also attached to the body of the stocking, but the "engine" of the stocking is all you get in toe. For a small child who will hopefully get a lifetime of use, the stocking doesn't stuff very well.

I am scoring this low because some of the felt was thin, and relatively poor quality, plus the design paint wears off very easy. I found through careful handling, I could for the most part preserve the pattern, but it wasn't near as easy as previous stockings. Plus there are areas that were to be sewn last in which the paint was nearly all gone by the time I got to that section. Thank goodness for the picture to keep me on track. I also noticed that the candy cane stripe at the top is sequined on half of the red stripes, but sequins are not called for closer to the holly. I fortunately had enough thread and sequins to add my own so the stripe looked even.

So as much as I love the look of the stocking, I would say the design and quality doesn't compare to the Bucilla Stockings of yesteryear. This stocking doesn't have the quality of the stockings I made from this company 10 and 20 years ago.

I bought this in September to make for my daughter who will be almost 8 months old at Christmas. It is a very time consuming project - I wish I had made it when pregnant instead of now when I'm caring for my very mobile baby! - but very user-friendly to do. It is literally a sew-by-number project. You do need to purchase a bag of filler (such as polyester fiberfill) to stuff the different parts of it to give it the 3-D effect. Some sewing knowledge is needed - I would say that you should definitely know applique and satin or split stitches at the very least. (The directions say to use satin stitch, but I have trouble with that so I used split stitch instead and it turned out beautifully.) To make sure that this was totally usable, I applique stitched red flannel to the inner sides so that any treats from Santa wouldn't inadvertently rip the stitches out. I also added a 1-inch band of fabric around the edge so that it has a bit more depth to it. (see pictures.) Overall, it has turned out absolutely beautifully. Love it, and will be making more of these for my husband and any future babies that I may have!

I'm glad I ordered this in July! This is a great stocking and the directions (5 Pages worth) are easy to follow. Know that this will take you some time and it is not a quick project. I have worked on mine consistently for about two days and it is still not close to being done. The sewing isn't difficult but there's around 150 felt pieces that have to be cut, a bizzilion sequins/beads that have to be sewn on and many of the pieces need embroidered in some way. Also, make sure you have a great pair of sewing scissors, polyester fiberfill so your stocking has a more 3 dimensional look, a ruler, and some straight pins. The instructions also call for a large eye needle and chenille stick, but so far at least, I haven't had a need for these. The kit comes with two needles, felt pieces and all the thread you will need. If you have never sewed before or are a beginner, this may be too much to take on!
