Years ago I owned the Boss version of this pedal. I was happy to find that Behinger's version is virtually identical in sound and operation to the Boss unit. The most important thing is that it's quiet and transparent when not in use. There's only two minor issues that keep it from getting 5 stars. One, the unit is made of plastic. It seems sturdy enough, but it's not metal. Secondly, the power input is on the side next to the input jack. Reaching the power input with your daisy chain power supply could be a little bit more of a stretch than if the input was on the top of the unit, like most pedals. Not a big deal, though. Definitely recommended.

What more can you ask for at roughly $25.00. This is a very useful guitar compressor. It is a simple compressor, that's it. Easy to understand with responsive controls.

I use compressors quite a lot. In my PA rack I have a Yamaha rack compressor and an Alesis rack compressor. In my home studio there are compressors in my 24 track DAW and in my computer I have the T-Racks Deluxe mastering software with several VST classic analog compressors like the Pultec as well as VST optical compressors. I only mention these as a way of saying that I am very familiar with compressors and adept at using them. I have a pretty thorough understanding of compression ratios, attack and release points and I have learned to use them sparringly and with care. The Behringer CS400 does a good job as a straight guitar compressor. It is usefull for taming levels from your guitar and boosting your signal which adds punch to the signal presented to your other effects and ultimately to your amp. In recording circles you often hear good engineers say that if they can hear the compressor working, it's not being used correctly. The Behringer CS400 is quiet, almost transparent (unlike the Behringer DC9 I discuss below). Yes, it is plastic but it's fairly well made and unless you are really rough on equipment with a little care it should last a few years. If you are putting it into a pedal board it should last a long time.

If money is not a concern go ahead and spend more on a rugged pedal made of metal but expect to pay somewhere around $75-$100.00 and up (Keeley,MXR, Digitech, etc.) Unless you go over $100.00 I don't think there will be a difference in performance and even then it will be subtle.

I bought the Behringer NR300 Noise Reducer and the Behringer CS400 Compressor Sustainer at the same time. (My comments are identical for both pedals.) For me, this pedal does a great job at 1/4 the price of the popular competing brand. My official rating is 4.5. I'm docking 0.5 point for the difficulty in replacing the battery (details later in this review). By all means, check the other reviews for their impressions of this effects pedal.

I'd like to address some things I haven't seen in other reviews. Based on my experience, you MUST power this pedal with a FRESH 9V battery. And remember, batteries don't last forever. As the battery reaches the end of its useful life, you will begin to hear unpleasant distortions. That's the time to put in a new battery, or switch to a 9V adapter.

Beware, though, that sound may be degraded if you power the pedal with a garden variety 9V adapter. I tried a random adapter that was lying around, and I got the same gravely sound as I did from a dying battery. My theory is that cheaper adapters may have significant amounts of AC coming through on top of the DC, and that AC can leak into the signal processing circuitry and affect the sound. Some AC on the DC is okay if you are a powering a lamp, but not if you want unadulterated sound coming from your guitar. So use only a high quality adapter. I use the Visual Sound One Spot Adapter, available here on Amazon. I can't detect any of the distortion I heard when using a dying battery or cheap adapter. Yes, the One Spot is more expensive than other adapters, but it's designed specifically to power effects pedals. While you're ordering the One Spot Adapter, get a Visual Sound One Spot Multi-Plug Cable so the adapter can power multiple effects pedals.

Behringer makes a LOT of electronics for guitar and bass. I have an FCB10 that I use and like, great controller for the price. The CS400 at roughly 20.00 is a decent pedal that will 'get the job done'. Is it equivalent to a Boss, Dynacomp, Visual Sound or Keeley compressor...nope. You will get 20.00 worth of use out of it though for sure. The housing is pretty flimsey and when you change the battery its a PITA. Just don't take a flying leap to stomp on it and battery consumption is really low so with a lot of use you may have to change the battery once or twice a year. Good pedal for the beginner at an unbeatable price point.

Behringer Sustain etc.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002X8Y4SQ/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_img

My first Behringer box was a Vintage Overdrive unit and worked so well, it started me back on the road of practice with purpose and in one year I have made tremendous progress... more than the last 10 years combined. So I decided to venture out into new effects...at least new to me. I know the tech description of compression, flange, chorus, reverb etc. Well I thought I understood. The sound is good in the compression area, with a sound that is very familiar in 70s-80s tunes I was pleased to get this unexpected effect but the sustain is not endless by any means. But perhaps my configuration is wrong perhaps wrong strings (Earnie Ball Reg. Slinky) or even a non-ideal guitar (Fender Squire Bullet/ Strat body-Tele-neck & machine head). I'll experiment with placement of stomp boxes (Compression 1st into Vintage Overdrive or V.O. 1st and Compress'/Sust'2nd). Now in spite of this issue I don't feel my money was ill spent. The serendipitous effect is quite good; Still I would like to have "endless sustain" or dramatic improvement. I think Behringer makes good products in this area and will buy from them again.
Has anyone else run into this situation? Am I doing something wrong? Throw me a bone please...somebody?
Thanks in advance.
