I have eaten kippers (with crackers) since I was a child. They are really healthy so I decided to try the lemon pepper. Can't believe I have missed out on this flavor. Lemon taste is very fresh as if I had just squeezed a fresh lemon on there. It also seems to diminish the fishy smell kippers are known for a bit.

Compared to other types of herring snacks in the can, this lemon pepper seems a little dry. Perhaps this is due to being packed in water, rather than oil. Overall, (in spite of the spice of the pepper) it just seems rather bland, without much fish flavor.

Brunswick Seafood Snack with lemon juice & cracked pepper is a great herring recipe. The fish is mild & fresh tasting for a canned product and because it doesn't have a smokey flavor it's quite versatile. I add a can to salads or on top of spaghetti or mixed in with roasted vegetables or on toast and served with a bowl of soup. It contains 1.5g of omega-3 heart healthy fats which is nearly twice the amount in an equivalent amount of salmon without the exposure to environmental toxins that larger and longer-lived fish like salmon present. Packs small and is ideal for long RV trips. Another favorite is King Oscar Mediterranean Style Sardines King Oscar Mediterranean Sardines, 3.75 Ounce Tins (Pack of 12) I've found these to be the best tasting sardines and I use them just as I do the Brunswick herring. I also use them as a substitute for anchovies on miniature flat bread or english muffin pizzas. Fresh fish, poultry, and an occasional steak round out my protein options but I eat a lot of these canned beauties.

I was a bit skeptical buying a tinned fish product that is flavored or spiced. My thinking is that it must be so nasty and foul that it NEEDS to be pre spiced? I was proven wrong. You get a nice firm boneless fillet that is devoid of heads, entrails and the like that is common in sardines. The Omega 3 and 6 rich flesh is not overly fishy like many sardine products. Pepper and lemon are MADE for oily fish, truly a perfect pairing, mild but gives a bit of kick. On a nice soda cracker, I would eat this over any canned tuna that is higher on the food chain and has notably higher mercury levels than these small tasty low food chain fishes. Herring fillets, tastier and healthier than tuna but not as fishy as whole sardines.

I'm now on a low sodium diet, and trying to find foods I can still eat. I love sardines with crackers and cheese, so thought I'd give these Brunswick Lemon & Cracked Pepper Seafood Snacks a try. At 220 mg of sodium per serving, it's pretty low compared to fish in mustard or hot sauce. Pretty much what I expected from this...a nice lemon pepper fishy flavor. Made a nice sandwich, would be great with crackers too. I'm pretty much a cheapskate, so I don't spend more than $1-$2 a can for sardines or fish steaks. The price was right for these as well!
