I bought this Benchmark Popcorn to compare to Great Northern Popcorn. I also wanted to save the $9.00 per case difference buying this popcorn as our household goes through a lot of popcorn. Also all microwave popcorns are not even close to real cooked popcorn so that is why I buy these portion packs.

First I have been buying Great Northern for a long time. I have always liked it and never had a reason to change until I saw this price difference. That being said I see a lot of Great Northern reviews stating that it is too salty. To me that was not a problem. The oil and seasoning were plentiful and did a good job of coating all the kernels. Almost all kernels popped to a great textured & firm popcorn. Still I can see some people wanting a lighter alternative.

Benchmark Popcorn is very good. It has less salt and butter flavor than Great Northern which some people may like. The popped kernels are lighter and fluffier. I think they put less oil in the package so this may be a healthier popcorn. The downside is because there is less oil and salt it has less taste. Also some of the popcorn ends up being white and not yellow because there is not enough seasoning to cover all the kernels. Overall I think it is a good popcorn but wish it had a little more oil and seasoning.

My personal opinion is Great Northern Popcorn is a little better. If you had them side by side in a taste test you would probably agree.

If you have the money Great Northern Popcorn is a good choice. I will still enjoy this case of Benchmark Popcorn as any real popped popcorn beats a microwave popcorn and I save $9.00 per case.

We used Great Northern before. It was good, but we had to leave out some of the salt, or it would be too much. This popcorn has the right amount of salt for our tastes, and the right amount of coconut oil. We will order this again. Hopefully it will still be 17 bucks a case.

I had been buying various premium popcorn, coconut oil with beta carotene for coloring, and Flavacol on Amazon and making my own popcorn portion packs. I thought I'd try the Benchmark 40004 Popcorn Portion Pack for 4 Ounce Popper as a convenience item. The popcorn popped with few unpopped kernels, but the kernels were smaller, and the popcorn was less flavorful than the gourmet popcorn to which I had become accustomed. Despite having less flavor, the popcorn was a bit saltier than I like. It seemed that the predominant flavor was "salty". This seemed like so-so microwave popcorn, after I had grown accustomed to movie popcorn at home. I'll eat it, but I won't serve this popcorn to my friends or family, and I'll continue to buy the ingredients and package my own so there is a minimum amount of fuss and bother on movie night. I put half a cup of popcorn in zip lock bags, and I put half a teaspoon of Flavacol in a 2 ounce portion cup (the little plastic cups used for salad dressing at salad bars) and almost fill the rest of the cup with coconut oil. I keep the coconut oil in the fridge or freezer to keep it solid in the summer, so it pops out of the plastic cup without leaving any residue. It's not much trouble to package my own single use packs, and its worth the effort to use good ingredients and package the popcorn in individual portion sizes for my Great Northern hand crank popper.

Perfect. I have been buying packs for quite awhile now and have had real trouble finding popcorn that is anything like theater popcorn without butter. This one is perfect and just like the theater popcorn. Love it!

As with other reviewers, I tried these popcorn portion packs because they weren't as expensive as what I've purchased in the past. And, as other reviewers stated, it just doesn't have the taste of the more expensive portion packs. I think this is probably due to not having enough salt mixed in with the kernels. Fortunately, I can add more seasoning salt before popping, though the oil is the right amount for the amount of kernels. I may or may not buy again; it depends on the results of experimenting with the salt and determining whether the oil itself is the culprit for the lackluster taste.

I use a Great Northern 8oz kettle in my home theater, and had been using the Great Northern brand of packets. They are pretty good. However, IMHO the Benchmark brand of pre-pack popcorn is better than Great Northern. Why so?
Reason number one is a more crunchy, less chewy popped kernel. Reason two is more popped kernels and less waste. Reason three is unlike Great Northern, the salt is pre-mixed with the corn in the Benchmark pack, and to my taste there is less of it. Good news for the many who complain Great Northern is too salty. If you like more salt ( I do ), it's easy enough to add a 1/4 teaspoon of Flavocol or your favorite salt. And reason four, Benchmark is currently priced about 40% less than Great Northern. You can't go wrong.

The flavor of this popcorn is fantastic. The kernels pop big and there are very few old maids. My only complaint, if you can even call it that, is that it blows the lid off my 6oz whirly pop. I use about 1/2 the packets to make popcorn. I certainly wouldn't call this a reason to down grade the product. I will just buy the 4oz packets next time. It is really handy having the pre-measured pouches. they are a breeze to keep in the camp trailer and cupboard. No measuring, just open the package and go. You can't go wrong with this product.
