If you live somewhere like Washington state, where (for some reason) very few homes are built with air conditioning then you will want to store this product in the refrigerator. With the cap facing upward. Even refrigerated, this stuff is fairly runny, but when the temps in your home soar into the upper seventies and even eighties, the smelly oils in Laxatone will leak out of the cap. It doesn't matter how hard you screw that sucker back on.

That little inconvenience aside, the product works. There is a LOT LESS vomiting going on in my house these days. I have two cats and, for some reason, they both have had serious hairball problems this year. Vet check-ups revealed nothing but a couple of healthy cats, yet very few days went by that I didn't find a little pile of vomit somewhere in my house. I go to a lot of expense and take great care with what I feed my kitties, so the petroleum hairball stuff really bothered me. The trouble is that a lot of the "natural" hairball control treats didn't work. The "natural" stuff typically works by using fiber to push bulk through the cats' guts, but it appears to be fairly useless when they already have a hairball built up in their tummies. I'm guessing the high fiber treats might work to keep hairballs from forming again once you manage to eliminate them with something else. That something else being Laxatone Natural. My cats don't like it on its own, but I've found that if I squirt a blob of Laxatone onto a plate and dribble sauce from their wet food over it, then they will lick it up happily enough. Hairball/vomit problem solved. Now if they would just let me brush them, everything would be perfect.

By the way, cats just vomit once in a while.

My young cat has permanent spine and nerve damage due to a back injury she got when she was a stray. She absolutely cannot poop on her own. This product is not intended for every day use but it is the only option other than her getting stopped up and dying. I have tried other brands of this product and this is without a doubt the very best. My vet suggested this product. I mix about a tablespoon (maybe a little more I don't actually measure it) with every meal (Wiskas Purrfectly Chicken) and it works wonders for her. I will may need to up the dosage when she is full grown. I also add a spoon full of pumpkin or a couple canned carrots cut up (this is high in fiber and also helps her get it out)
Bottom line, non of this would work without Laxatone. If I could give this 10 stars I would. She was in and out of the vet and miserable before I found out about this. She is happy and lives a pretty normal life because of this product.

I like that this doesn't have corn syrup and petroleum jelly in it. I had been using the regular Laxatone and Lax'aire products, but not for hairballs for softer stools. My kitten, now a year old, has had an ongoing issue with extremely dry stools even though he eats 1/2 wet 1/2 dry diet (wish it were all wet food) and apparently doesn't drink enough water. Anyhow, he loved the taste of the other two as I'd just put some on his food dish and he'd lick it up so there was a concern he wouldn't like the natural version. Thankfully he loves this just as much crying for it as soon as he sees me reach for the tube.

As for effectiveness, neither of the other two seemed to help soften much although I feared giving him too much as I didn't want him to become dependent upon it for bowel movements. It does make me feel better giving him the natural version. We'll see if it helps soften his stool as thus far even giving him about two half inch servings a day hasn't seemed to help :-( And, I really hope none of the ingredients are bad for kitties...

Update as of July 5, 2014: This product HAS really made a difference and my kitten is no longer in distress or crying when it's time for a bowel movement. It's comforting to know this natural product has made all the difference versus the original product. I give him about 1 inch twice a day. He continues to lick it up as I just put it on his bowl. His sister won't eat it, but she doesn't have any need for it either.

My 13 yr old long-hair cat eats massive quantities of fur as a hyperthyroidism complication. Giving him 1/2 Tbsp of standard Laxatone daily kept him from having hairballs & even the uncomfortable "hairball hack".

I am concerned about giving him that amount of petroleum product daily, especially since he had one eye removed for probable cancer. Per my vet, although anecdotal evidence suggests there are few, if any, long-term consequences of petrolatum ingestion, that hasn't actually been researched much.

My cat strongly resists taking any gel medication and draws blood if I attempt giving him liquid medication. I kept the standard Laxatone in my fridge & so could squeeze it out onto my fingertip, then roll it off my finger onto the back of his tongue. So he was able to get the standard Laxatone with no problem.

Laxatone Natural has an entirely different consistency. Refrigerating it yields a very squishy and runny gel that runs off my finger before I can get it into my cat's mouth. He hates the taste & acts as if he's been poisoned (running, avoiding me, etc). He's rather picky about taste, though, so take his rejection with a grain of salt. Cats can't technically spit, but I swear this one has gotten Laxatone Natural all over my apartment. Freezing Laxatone Natural solidifies it just a little too much to where it's very difficult to squeeze out of the tube.

I'm still giving it to him, though, until I figure out a petroleum-free replacement since Laxatone Natural does seem to prevent hairballs. Laxatone Natural seems to be a far stronger lubricant than is the standard Laxatone. I don't have to give Laxatone Natural to him as frequently as standard laxatone. I'm still not game for the fight he puts up, though, so will continue to find a replacement product.
