This has been my first exposure to a Raymond Griffith film; prior, I had only read about him in books. An almost forgotten figure in silent comedy history, Griffith deserves the accolades as a smooth comedian, a unique presence in this realm. The problem is that so many of his films are seemingly lost, victims of time & neglect.
But "Hands Up!"--often regarded as Griffith's best film--is a real treat as we watch this Civil War spy slyly get out of one predicament, and into another. The Indian dance is hysterical stuff, along with him distracting a firing squad with "clay pigeons", as well as juggling the affections of two sisters. The closing gag is a subject that's refreshingly ahead of its time.
Along with the feature is a delightful 1925 Our Gang silent short called "The Love Bug".
So if you prefer the well-timed comedy of Buster Keaton's "The General" (released the same year, 1926), then fine. But do give "Hands Up!" a look-see; it's not as elaborate, but it's quite funny!
