Most people get tartar build-up on the back sides of their lower front teeth. If you want to remove this build-up with a dental professional instrument, this will help get the job done. It has a sickle end and a right angle scaler end, both very sharp and capable of removing tartar.
Scale by engaging the tartar below the gumline, and then sweeping the scaler upward against the root and crown of the tooth. This will removed the tartar deposits. This is best done with good lighting and in front of the bathroom mirror. Sometimes a hand dental mirror is needed to fully visualize the tartar. Here is a good quality mirror: Professional Instruments Dental Mirror - Miltex Brand.

This is a single person item, since most people do not have the sterilization equipment necessary to render oral pathogens dead. Therefore, do not share this instrument with anyone else! Hepatitis and HIV are bloodborne pathogens that can be transmitted by dental instruments. Periodontal disease can also be transmitted. Clean with alcohol wipe after every use. Put in the dishwasher for further cleaning.

Clean teeth keep our gums healthy. Scaling a person's teeth gives infected
gums a chance to become normal again.
However, gums remain healthy only when we keep the teeth beside
them clean. If we are not careful about cleaning our teeth after they are
scaled, tartar will soon return. Instead of being healthy, the gums will
become sore and infected again.
If the person has a mild gum problem (gums that bleed), wait a week or so
before scaling. If the person uses this time to clean his teeth better and to
rinse with warm salt water, the gums will improve. The person's teeth
will be easier to scale.
We scale teeth with special instruments called scalers. There are many
different kinds of scalers for different teeth, to make scaling easier. It can be
a problem to know which ones to buy.
Scalers are expensive instruments. For that reason, it is better to order only a
few instruments that you can use to clean most teeth.
You need only 2 double-ended scalers, or 4 single-ended scalers.
One with two pointed tips--to remove tartar from the part of the
tooth near the gum.
Another with two blunt, rounded ends--to remove tartar from the
part of the tooth under the gum.
The blade at each end of the scaler is sharp. You must keep the blade sharp.
A sharp blade can break more of the tartar away than a blunt blade.
Tartar starts to form inside the gum pocket. There it builds up, because the
gums protect it. So you often must feel rather than see the tartar when you
scale a tooth.
You must remove all of the tartar so the gums can heal. New tartar grows
faster when there is old tartar Ieft behind for it to build upon.

I have searched forever in local stores to find a decent scaler, but I could not find a 'real' one. Yes you can find the cheap dull scalers in the drug stores, but they are definitely sub-par compared to this thing. I agree with the other reviewers that this thing is sharp and you need to be careful. However, with professional level quality, you can get the job done that no other cheaper scalers can do.

Stay away from the cheaper sets you can find on Amazon (i.e. the 10 for $10) as those are really flimsy and not designed for real dental needs. All you need is one really good one like this one and you are good to go!

This works great. Just be sure you know how to use it because it is extremely sharp.

I've never tried any "self-dentistry" before (other than brushing, flossing and rinsing)..so this device required a slight learning curve. Once you get the hang of it, you'll love it. Be careful, because it is highly sharpened, very hard stainless steel..it can cut you if not careful. Otherwise, go slowly and you'll have a great time. One thing i never realized is that stainless steel scrapers slide smoothly over healthy teeth..that is, UNTIL it touches plaque or calcium on your teeth..then you can feel the scraping..it's a great way to determine where to scrape. This device does a great job, and with some care, can restore the look and feel of most teeth. However, there is a limit to where you can reach and/or see. This is a very high quality product and will last a lifetime. Do your best and dental visits will go a lot more smoothly and less frequently. :D

This is a serious tool! Very sharp and strong. I use it to scrape tartar from my teeth occasionally. I'm not a dental hygienist so I use it very carefully.

I've gotten tons of use from a harmless common metal toothpick (it looks similar, but it isn't sharp). I use it after every meal, can't stand feeling stuff stuck between my teeth. But I would like something to scrape my teeth. That's why I bought this scaler many years ago. But I have hardly used it. I'm coordinated (think juggling) and believe in empowering the individual, but this is too much. The blade is more like a tiny and fragile knife when it should be like a chisel. A knife blade isn't required for removing plaque. All it requires is a chisel.

So, that's what I'm shopping for now, something that can be used in addition to the harmless blunt metal toothpick that I use after every meal.
