I bought this freezer / fridge three years ago and it was, quite frankly, life changing. That might sound like an over the top statement, but in my situation it's true. I drive tractor-trailer for living and in an attempt to keep expenses low, have always had a microwave and DC powered cooler in my truck. This allowed me to avoid eating in truck stops and restaurants and save a lot of money, but my menu was limited because I didn't have the ability to keep frozen food. The Waeco CF-50 (same thing as Dometic CF-50 by the way) has allowed me to greatly expand the variety of food I can keep in my truck.

This freezer has an adjustable temperature ranging from 50 degrees (not sure why you'd want 50 degree food) all the way down to 0 degrees F. It keeps everything from frozen diners to Ben & Jerry's ice cream nice and solid. It comes with handles that you need to attach yourself, but I opted to leave them off. I've got the biggest factory sleeper available on a Peterbilt, but in a truck every inch of space gained is valuable. Since the handles don't collapse when installed, they stick out and cause the freezer to take up an additional four to six inches of space.

My one gripe with the design of this freezer is that the lid is convex instead of flat. This probably won't be an issue for most people, but I have the freezer sitting on the floor of my sleeper berth and my microwave sitting in top of the freezer. This would be an easy arrangement if it weren't in a truck that averages 120,000 miles a year on the decaying roads of America. The convex design makes it very difficult to place anything on top of the freezer and hope it will stay for long once the vehicle is in motion.

Compressor fridges are so vastly superior to 12 volt thermoelectric "coolers" it is laughable - but they are pricey, especially at the compact end of the spectrum. This CDF-11 uses a Danfoss compressor design identical to larger portable fridge-freezers, and that component drives the price. That being said, this was the least-expensive 12V compressor fridge-freezer I could find, and after a couple of months I'm very happy with the performance. It is easy to carry with the included strap, uses very little power, very quiet, and will keep food and beverages as cold as you like, all the way down to frozen solid as long as you have a good battery in your vehicle.

And though 11 quarts is pretty small, you can fit more than you might think if you are used to using ice or blue ice to keep things cold in a regular cooler. Using all of the volume for your food and drinks instead of ice makes a difference!

In exchange for that cost, what you get is storage for about a dozen 12 oz cans if you pack efficiently, made for in-car use, with a main compartment almost the height of the unit, overhung in back by the upper "ceiling" wall which allows securing the unit - a clever capture groove is designed to allow you to belt the cooler down on a passenger seat using a standard seat/shoulder belt, which is then kept in place with the lower groove and the closed lid. You also never need to buy ice, or have a soggy sandwich or nasty milk-water-hot dog juice sloshing around in a cooler. And while coolers are cheap, the cost of ice can really add up over years. I like to really go into the boonies, and not needing to replenish ice is an appreciated convenience. This fridge has me sold and I intend to buy a larger example like an Engel or ARB to use under my camper shell when desert camping.

I owned Norcold chest freezers for a number of years with good results. I purchased the CF 50-110U on 6/06/12. It worked very well the first year. At Lake Powell, with ambient temperature of 90 degrees, it used about 30 amps for 24 hours (out of a 110 Amp hour group 31 battery, and kept the frozen food at 5 degrees F. This summer, about 2 months out of warrantee it ran all of the time and would only get down to 9 degrees F (most of the time it was between 11 and 13 degrees F, indicated on the LED readout.
After returning home, I began to experiment and found that when the LED read out was at 33, the temperature in the box was 28 F (in an alcohol solution with a lab type thermometer). When the LED was 11 degrees, the temperature in the box was 5 degrees, and the unit was running full time. The unit was cooling well, but the thermostat (thermistor actually was off). I reviewed the internet, and found that this was a known problem with these units, and that before Dometic purchased WAECO, there were two thermistors in the unit, so than when one failed--as they all seem to do, you could just plug in the other one! No extra thermistor in mine.

Dometic was very difficult to deal with. They refused to put me in touch with a technician ("no technician available for retail sales"), and out of 15 various "service centers" within 90 miles of my location: 5 were out of business, 9 did not work on this type of unit--including several, which did no service, and only sold parts. One technician, who does not seem to have a brick and mortar location (only a cell phone and truck)--was kind enough to spend some time talking to me, even though he had not even seen one of the units, and did not know they existed--and will help me get a new thermistor (hopefully).
