This thing is super sturdy, I feel like it could withstand being ran over! It says Made in Germany on the blade (and the replacement blade that is included on the side) and on the sharpener itself, it says Magnesium.
The though process when designing this took note of the little things it shows: Free replacement blade screwed in the side for safety and a hole at the opposite end of the sharpening opening (presumably for allowing the point to poke through as you are sharpening so you don't break it off - SMART).
I will say this though - As awesome and pretty as this sharpener is, I probably would not let kids use it or at least modify so the blade won't cut them (or remove it altogether). The extra blade is held in by a single screw (second picture) and there is a chance you could nick yourself on it where it is positioned (though you could probably unscrew and flip it over so the blade is on the edge of the crevice - look at the last picture to see the gap on the side of the grips.)

I had no idea how much of a difference it makes to have a good sharpener. I've been using a cheap sharpener on my colored pencils and have been suffering with lead breakage and chewed up wood. I truly wish I'd spent the money to get a better sharpener sooner as I feel like I'm saving so much of the pencil! This sharpener gets the pencil to a really sharp point and only takes off a small sliver of wood, so it allows me to keep a fine point without wasting a lot of the pencil itself. It's even fixed some pencils that I had previously damaged. It comes with a second blade attached to the side, although it sounds like (from other reviews) that the blade lasts a while. I'm thrilled, would highly recommend, and will be buying a back up!
