This review is of the Staedtler 24-count of colored pencils, pre-sharpened, type 144 ND24. These are probably the best mass-produced colored pencils I've encountered in this highly competitive, mass-market field and for all that, quite reasonably priced.

The hues for the two dozen pencils are attractive -- the normal primaries and secondaries, of course, and some interesting neutrals that include a hearty, almost grayish brown (I don't know their names because they are not to be found), a good vivid wine, olive (or, if you will, asparagus) and dark brown, along with multiple light and dark shades of blue, green, and a red range that includes red orange, wine, and pink as well as a rather gentle red itself. They are not highly invested in neon colors, as are some of the similar kids' crayons like Cra-Z-Art. These Staedtlers should be adequate to draw almost anything except human faces; there aren't quite enough neutrals for that without elaborate shading techniques. (But then, if your technique is at such a level, you'd probably be spending two or three dollars per stick out of Dick Blick, Prismacolor, or Derwent.)

While these Staedtler Colored Pencils are nicely pre-sharpened, they do not include eraser tips. Barring any of the more "arty" pencil erasers to use on the side, a good quality non-latex tip like those from yellow-barrel Dixon Ticonderoga will work with a little gentle patience. Overall these colored pencils were designed and manufactured in Germany to a very high quality standard (DIN 71). Something special to this pencil is a thin white layer of ABS that protects the wood from the color+clay within. A recommendation: Art pencils like these should always be sharpened by hand.Read more ›

My grand daughters love these pencils. The color is brilliant and the lead is softer than the others. They felt they were expensive pencils from the art store. Unlike other reviewers they can packaged well and none of I the pencils or points were broken.

The break-resistant leads are a great feature. The leads are rather hard, so colors are quite faint overall.

This is the first time I am using these pencils. The variety of colors was one of the reasons that I purchased them. Very pleased with the outcome and use. They are smooth and blend easily. They are true to their color. I would recommend them. Planning to purchase more Staedtler products.
